Skisports Posted May 1, 2002 Posted May 1, 2002 Has anyone done the west ridge in May if so was there snow on the route still. Quote
Terry Posted May 1, 2002 Posted May 1, 2002 I spent four days up there several years ago in April. The plateau was still covered with 6 to 8 inches of snow but the South Faces were clear. We did a couple routes on Prussik and Boxtop. No crowds, no permits, no parking passes, no rangers. Terry Quote
Mike Posted May 2, 2002 Posted May 2, 2002 I've done Prusik in mid-June. It was great! Still plenty of snow on the approach, but you could bivy on nice flat slabs of granite - fabulous! Quote
Skisports Posted May 2, 2002 Author Posted May 2, 2002 Terry why you up there did you catch a gilmer of the westridge call me pussy but I am not up for the south face this early in the year Quote
Skisports Posted May 2, 2002 Author Posted May 2, 2002 Yeah I hear yeah but I have heard the ticket is steep "if you get caught" Quote
erik Posted May 2, 2002 Posted May 2, 2002 quote: Originally posted by Skisports: Yeah I hear yeah but I have heard the ticket is steep "if you get caught" U R RIGHT, DONT GO THERE AT ALL..... Â FAWK DA TOOL!!! Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted May 2, 2002 Posted May 2, 2002 100$ but I can run faster than any ranger.... Let them try to chase me in the wilderness back there that I know more than them most likely. Â Most tickets come at the trailhead anyway.. Â Plus I have never seen a ranger back there. Just in the parking lot. Although I am sure they travel... Â "Hi Ranger, My name is Max from Colorado. Sorry I dont have permit. Here is my address 1313 Mockingbird lane." Â Another key is to go super light and say you are day hiking through... Â It's up to you to be creative or get your permit. I am just offering info... Quote
Skisports Posted May 2, 2002 Author Posted May 2, 2002 I am with yeah all the way... lite pack and "emergance bivy" its all good. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted May 2, 2002 Posted May 2, 2002 Just watch out for radio holders. Then make sure you exit to your car after daylight or avoid the law somehow. They can have rangers and suck waiting for you at the trailhead. Including sherrif's I hear.. Be smart about it. Quote
Skisports Posted May 2, 2002 Author Posted May 2, 2002 Caveman, have you seen a sherif up in those parts... I didn't think that many people were that stupid about going up there and getting caught. Quote
nolanr Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 Did W. Ridge last year in early June. A lot less snow than this year, snow free 'til a little above Colchuck Lake, then completely snow covered the rest of the way up to Aasgard and in the Enchantments. Route itself was snow free. It was windy and cold, route was mostly in shadows. Have fun! Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 The sherrif in the parking lot. I never said stupid but maybe careless could be a better explanation. I dont have time to type a 300 word essay. Have fun. Quote
Jake Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 Never seen a ranger up there hiking around I don't think a cop would really want to drive up there to just give a ticket. Quote

The cops come after the rangers radio them in to check for warrants. It's not regular activity but it has happened..... Quote
A-Dog Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 I'm climbing prusik in late late June. We will be hiking over Asgaard Pass. Has anyone done Asgaard in late June? What gear would you recommend? thanks Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 A dog I recommend mini gaiters and leather boots but not full on mtneering just something for the snow. That is why I dont go that way. I hike in sneakers via Snow Creek. Quote
Jason_Martin Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 I did the West Ridge in early May about four years ago. There was no snow on the route... Â We had gone in to do the South Face, but it started to rain. We just were not willing to bail after making that long approach. Â Jason Quote
Skisports Posted May 3, 2002 Author Posted May 3, 2002 I would perfer to go in august but i didn't get permits this year opps so I will just have to go any way Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 SkiSports hint I never had a permit ever. Been back there at least 4 times.. Â I camped away from any trail. Quote
Dru Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 so if you have a multiday pack and a day use permit and you get stopped "I am just sherpa-ing in some gear for a friend and i am coming back out tonight. I have no car in the parking lot I am just going to walk down the road to a friends house. its a full moon and i plan to hike all night and not bivi." Quote
Alpinfox Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 I climbed the W. ridge last year in early June just before the permits were required. Came in via Asgard Pass. We hit snow just above Colchuck Lake and there was snow up to the base of the route. Some snow in crevices and holes, etc, but for the most part the route was snow-free. It was friggin' cold the night before we climbed though and it snowed a bit. It's a fun route and the summit tower looks bad-ass from the base of the route. Â Enjoy. Quote
nolanr Posted May 5, 2002 Posted May 5, 2002 Alpinfox maybe you were up there the same time as us. We got to the trailhead too late so just crashed there, did it car-to-car. There was another party that camped at Colchuck Lake and were a little ahead of us on the route, I think there were 3 or 4 of them. Quote
