alienPDX Posted July 1, 2002 Posted July 1, 2002 Does anyone know recent route conditions for the Sitkum Glacier Route on Glacier Peak, specifically what kind of equipment is needed for a climb up/board down? I have read contrasting reports ranging from people summiting in tennis shoes to ropes and ice screws being necessary. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted July 1, 2002 Posted July 1, 2002 I recommend a big wall rack- 3 camalot #5s 2 #4s 2 #3s triple of everything smaller than that. Dont forget to bring 2 ice tools and ice screws Quote
pete_a Posted July 1, 2002 Posted July 1, 2002 when I did it about this time of year two summers ago....I hiked the entire approach to Boulder Basin wearing running shoes and carrying my skis and telemark boots. We booted up the Sitkum, brought ice axe, crampons, and one picket+prussiks each, and a 8mm glacier rope. Never bothered roping up though but took the rope up with us..I believe we did wear crampons though, and used a ski pole and axe most of the way. Skied off the summit, and all the way back to the basin. Hope this helps. Feel free to drop me an email if you have any other questions. peter_alderson@hotmail.com Quote
alpentalcorey Posted July 2, 2002 Posted July 2, 2002 My experience was somewhat the same as petea - brought a rope, didn't use it. Quote
Jim Posted July 2, 2002 Posted July 2, 2002 Kept my skies on except the last 300 feet, skied up and down unroped in mid-spring. Quote
Mike Posted July 8, 2002 Posted July 8, 2002 We did the Sitkum later in the season - some open crevasses in August. Probably better conditions for boarding early in the season. Quote
