the only cool thing about having to fly through lax to get to reno was seeing this:

Renton is less crowded than I envisioned.

while it's cool to see that stuff from the air, i'll admit, it's a bugger to have planes flying right down the axis of the valley, one every few minutes, when you are trying to do some photography there. damn contrails. the same goes for death valley and other points out west. it's like the airlines purposely put their flight paths right over everything a photographer might want to shoot. can't think of how many shots/hours i've had wasted by jets.

the flight i was on did not go "right down the axis of the valley." the only reason i even saw it is because i noticed the change in the landscape from brown to gray and started actively looking ...

I've made that trip a number of times, and routinely scan for the scene of previous adventures. One paticularly stellar crystal clear day our pilot had the soul of a tour guide, and was sure to point out the various volcanos, Lake Tahoe, and went so far as to do a steep bank directly over the Valley just so you could look out the window down into the big ditch. I think that was my favorite commercial flight ever.

I used to fly the sea-tac to lax route a couple times a month. Flying over Yosemite was usually the highlight. On a clear day, the view is great. Sometimes, you can also get a great look at the Needles a bit farther south.
