cman Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 Jackson Hole is planning on closing their tram permenantly next summer. jacksonholetram having spent a couple winters there i have to say it is the best lift in the country and it will be a shame to see it go. you can still get out there this winter. typical ski area, they are spending there money putting up lodges, condos and beginner lifts. thelawgoddess Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 i heard about that. i've never been. guess this winter will be my last chance!!! Quote
chris Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 WTF? The Tram provided the best access to the BC, not to mention the Hobacks/the Bowl, and Corbett's. It placed Jackson on par with Whistler and Snowbird. They better replace it with something. Besides, the tram building is built! Why not simply replace the towers, machinery, and cars but keep the base station alive? Quote
cman Posted July 16, 2005 Author Posted July 16, 2005 all they said in those articles was that it would cost 15-20 mil for a new tram, sounded like they were angling for some state or federal money. Quote
TeleRoss Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Your own legs provide the best access to the backcountry. The lines at the tram were insanely long + you can get to better skiing and backcountry without taking the tram anyway. Quote
Fairweather Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Damn. What is the stated reason for this? The age of the system? Environmental? I don't get it. My wife, kids, and I took the tram to the top last summer and spent a few hours watching almost 100 paragliders soar into the sky on a sunny, windless day. Quote
cman Posted July 16, 2005 Author Posted July 16, 2005 I think it was age, the tram was finished in '63 and has seen year round use since. corbets will be sick if you have to hike to it. when i lived there a coule times friends and i hired a guide for a half day on sick powder days, we would get 5-6 trams laps in by noon. there is nothing better than getting off the tram and just charging down 4K and getting right back on it.
