forrest_m
nice catch of a poorly worded explanation, tomtom, but i think the point is that the factory that reduces pollution can sell tcredits for their reduction on the market and the bad factory can buy those same credits. no reduction in total pollution, but at least a zero sum. Dru
year two. Â Plant A still produces 2,000,000 tonnes. Â Plant B invested some of its profits from selling excess emissions from quota into better emissions controls. Plant B only emits 400,000 tonnes this year. Â Quota is lowered from 1,000,000 tones to 900,000. Â Plant B sells Plant A 500,000 again. Â Plant A now has to buy 1,100,000 tonnes. 500,000 from Plant B and 600,000 from other sources or be fined. Â Net emissions (A+B) drop from 2,500,000 to 2,400,000. Â Repeat until Plant A becomes unprofitable due to high cost of fines and quota buying and is shut down. Mr._Natural
What does any of this have to do with climbing? Shouldn't this be in spray?

minx
i like the emissions trading concept for industrial entities. i don't know why but i feel pretty strongly that it's a lame way to justify commuting in your SUV.
Dru
to be fair they should have emissions quotas for individuals too. then if you leave your SUV and walk to work, or eat wild salmon instead of kidney beans, you'd get an emission credit you could trade! cj001f
only 2 of the 10 salmon were chilean - not enough to draw a conclusion. Fairweather is right! Socialism rots the brain! Â Dru, that's exactly the same data you cited. Either it's representative, or it's not.

BreezyD
Yeah, yeah ... I thought I was posting it in Spray but I wasn't paying attention. Sorry. Â For the record, I actually drive a Honda Civic which is pretty darn fuel efficient, but am looking for ways to give back environmentally with respect to my auto. Â Â no - overall the data is valid, but split into subpopulations, there is not enough data to be valid, except maybe with respect to Canadian salmon which made up the majority of the samples. How about this study synopsis: "Moreover, most farm-raised salmon sold in the United States comes from Chile -- and the pollutant level in it was not too much higher than that found in some wild-caught salmon." http://edition.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/01/08/salmon.pollution.ap/ What now Ice Pick boy? Dru
That's not an accurate conclusion to draw from the fish they used. But I doubt the editor at CNN has a statistics background.
Geek_the_Greek
All this discussion of emissions trading is very nice. Yes, if you know how much emissions reduction you want, the permit trading scheme is an economically efficient way to acheive such a goal. Â That doesn't have much to do with the SUV-tag plan, which is optional, not based on a quota, and therefore more or less meaningless when compared to coal plants and the like. It's a different study fucktard. This one used 700 salmon.
