I'm trying to refine my old school mentality wardrobe and want some input on what to bring on an average 1 day to 1 week summer mountaneering trip. I'm starting by losing the gortex and buying a soft shell but am still a little leary about even this. What do you do in camp when it's pissing rain and you're on day 2 of 7? Any input right from the ginch to the toque is appreciated. Also even cragging... It's a no brainer in the summer but what do you wear for pants on those colder days and what do you carry on the full day MP?

i use shoeler pants w/ shorts as backups for hot approaches. a hat. 1 t-shirt or tank top.1 pair of long johns top and bottom. 1 change of socks for trips more than 3 days. a light wind jacket unless im climbing ice or snow then i bring my marmot alpinist jacket, its pretty light gore tex XCR- keeps the rain from pounding on your head. for around camp when its really raining a tarp or if you want to go really tech, silicone impregnated nylon tarp with a bivy sack, or sub bivi sack for BD mega mid or mega light it makes for a more social event. have fun this year, light is right bigdrink.gif

I've had a lot of people recommend buying a soft shell to wear almost all the time. Then to layer with a down jacket if it is snowing and cold or a light precip jacket if its pouring. Any comments or experience with this setup?

a lot depends on whether you will be moving through bad weather or just hanging in the tent. Also the temperature. If it's warm and raining sometimes it's ok to forgo any type of rainshell and just strip down to the bare minimum, and let a few items of clothes get soaked while the rest is packed up waterproof in the pack. In the summer I usually carry cheapo coated nylon rainwear, sometimes a light umbrella too.

I'm with ya on that one, Fern. as long as it's above say 50 degrees, I'll just brave the rain (if it's light to moderate) with layers of polypro..... all the while daydreaming about the nice dry goretex I'll put on when i get to camp. smile.gif
