The rattle under my car is a loose catalytic converter rattling around in the muffler. holy toledo, a catalytic converter rattling around inside the muffler? that is one f'd up vehicle. do you drive a klein bottle around town? Ducknut Posted June 2, 2005 Share Posted June 2, 2005 to be really geeky, the catalytic converter is separate from the muffler. Now it may be all busted up and pieces making their way back into the muffler, but normally the converter and muffler are several feet apart. The funny thing is that it didn't even occur to Joe Mechanic until I mentioned the words "catalytic converter" so I'm still not 100% convinced. If the noise sounds like small pebbles (or even ping pong balls) rolling around in a metal can, similar to a musical instrument called a "rainstick", then it's definitely a catalytic converter failure.
