Alpine_Tom Posted November 21, 2002 Posted November 21, 2002 I just got the following e-mail this morning: The Schurman Rock fundraising effort is at $83,000! Seattle Parks Foundation is raising $90,000 to renovate the Rock at Camp Long and is hoping to reopen it for public use in the Spring. We are asking you to donate towards the first manmade, all natural climbing rock in North America. Because REI is matching all donations dollar for dollar, your support will be doubled. A $50 donation equals $100! The local mountaineer community has been unbelievably supportive of this effort and is excited to see Schurman Rock reopen so all ages of climbers, beginners and advanced, can enjoy real outdoor climbing right here in Seattle. Please send your donation to: Seattle Parks Foundation 860 Terry Avenue North Seattle, WA 98109 Please contact me if you want more information. Thanks for supporting this regional climbing icon, Kris Sorensen Project Manager Seattle Parks Foundation (206) 332-9900 kris@seattleparksfoundation.org I don't know why I got it, maybe because I'd e-mailed various people at the City to ask why, exactly, Schurman Rock was closed down. (Turns out it wasn't because of the earthquake, but because of earth shifting problems that had been accumulating for years.) I assume "the local mountaineering community" is "The Mountaineers." At any rate, this is, I guess, good news, and anyone who wants to probably ought to contribute. Quote
tivoli_mike Posted December 12, 2002 Posted December 12, 2002 I saw a little flyer up in Stone Gardens saying that Schurman rock was on track to reopen in 2003... It looked like a city parks publication. Anyone else know the scoop? Quote
To_The_Top Posted December 12, 2002 Posted December 12, 2002 I did talk to the park about this awhile back and they are trying to open it again. Thanks for bringing this back to the top. The reason I was told it closed was liability, but I want it open as I live 10 min from it. Time to send some $. TTT Quote
freeclimb9 Posted December 12, 2002 Posted December 12, 2002 I read in Wired about a never-used cooling tower at a once-considered nuclear power plant in Washington (I think it's in Eumclaw) that was posited to REI as an artificial climbing wall. REI balked. The tower is still unused. But $83,000 would buy a lot of plastic holds. Quote
forrest_m Posted December 12, 2002 Posted December 12, 2002 i think climbing up the inside of a nuclear cooling tower would be cool, like a desert spire in the inverse... but the WPPSS site is a lot more than 10 minutes from downtown seattle. Quote
Pencil_Pusher Posted December 12, 2002 Posted December 12, 2002 "First" man-made, all natural blah blah? Huh? Quote
Toast Posted December 13, 2002 Posted December 13, 2002 Ya know, REI and the Mounties catch a lot of shit on this board, but it's REI that's matching donations dollar for dollar, and the Everett Mountaineers that stepped up to the plate and cut a $20,000 check. Now that deserves a Quote
