barjor Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 So when do you think Cascade Lakes Highway (State 46) will open? Does anyone know a phone number that I can call and check when it will open? I have failed to figure out who actually manage the sister area. Thanks Quote
gapertimmy Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 although ODOT could probably plow out the hwy (there ain't much snow on it) my guess is that they won't touch it till after Oregon Spring Break (March 21st) as some businesses like Elk Lake Lodge depend on the snow access. fwiw, there is still about 2 feet of snow on the road at dutchman flat. kurthicks Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 According to ODOT it's controlled by the Deschutes county road dept. I called them late last week, they said they'd start on the 28th. there is some sort of agreement with the snomo crowd to keep it closed until then. Quote
gapertimmy Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 fkn slednekkers i'm pretty certain it is the elk lake lodge that keeps the road snow filled till after spring break. i personally think it is better for the road to stay closed a bit longer. parking is always an issue, and it keeps the corn more pristine. steepconcrete Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 (edited) fwiw, there is still about 2 feet of snow on the road at dutchman flat. isnt that the min. snow depth for sleds to be legal off trail? I know it was either 24" or 18" according to some USFS winter rec. map I have. so I take it BAchelors reported 60" is a bit of a stretch? edited cause i kant type. gapertimmy Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 hey man, don't knock the magical 60". the snow stake does read 60" (as it is in a sheltered spot). there are bare spots all over the place around dutchman, and up towards moon mtn/ball butte area. its amazing how much snow has melted in the past 2 weeks above tree line on all aspects. if anyone is interested in getting anything in the sisters, they should be making plans right about..... now. steepconcrete Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 Do you think BAchey will be able to make it to the end of May? Quote
gapertimmy Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 i seriously doubt it. unless we start to get snow really soon, which doesn't look too promising right now. wouldn't it be funny if PPP got canceled due to lack of snow Quote
steepconcrete Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 That sucks, but out of all the PNW Bachelor by far got the best from this crap winter. Quote
gapertimmy Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 the elevation and southern/eastern location from the crest is bachelors saving grace in years like this. snow is still fun right now... very spring like, get it while its still here fellas! Quote
