I'm in the market for a pair of lightweight leathers at the moment and the La Sportiva Trango Extreme S seemed like it might fit the bill. Does anyone have any personal experience with this boot? Is it sufficiently warm? How's the fit -- similar to the Makalu?

Pretty good boot, light weight, a bit stiff and has a heel welt for pons. I wanted this to be my all around midweight do everything boot except I have found the toe box to be a bit cramped, something you might want to consider if you have a wide foot. Also this is not a leather boot hence the "S" in the title. I have had great luck with all of my LaSportiva boot choices including the K2, K3, Trango and now Trango "S", though after a couple of 40+ mile trips I thought I would loose a couple of toes. Give them a try but choose wisely, good luck.

I've got a pair and like them just fine. Sufficiently warm? Yeah, I think so, I've used them ice climbing to about 5 farenhiet and been comfortable, if not exactly toasty. They do indeed seem to fit just ablut like the Makalus. Probably fairly robust; though I haven't used them for a lot of alpine thrashing yet a friend of mine seems to get away with it.

Thought I might stir up this topic again...

So did you get the Trango Extremes?

Also, dirtwigle, you referred to them as "Trango". Do you have the Yellow ones? Just making sure we are truly talking about the Extremes.

I'm looking for a good "leather" mountaineering boot. I have plastics, which will be good for multiple days on the glacier. But if I'm doing an overnight summit on Rainier or other 14ers for example, am I going to freeze my toes? And how about waterproofness?

Thanks

I almost bought trango extremes once (the old style/notS/leather ones) and my girlfriend has them, too. One thing to pay attention to about fit is that they don't seem to lock down the heel very well, at least on my feet and I have heard that is a common complaint. So make sure your heel won't rub too much.

If those don't work, the Scarpa Freney XT looks like a very nice boot too. It too is synthetic, but I have seen the old Freney on sale for very cheap (I forget where) but then you wouldn't be able to try them on.
