ScottP Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I'm looking for suggestions for reggae bands along the style lines of The Itals and Toots and the Maytals. Please and thank I. Quote
b-rock Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Check out 'Tougher Than Tough: Story of Jamaican Music' box set. Little pricey but it'll open up a whole new world... Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 The Ethiopians would probably get your head bobbing. Most of their stuff is in the form of compilations, as they no doubt released a lot of singles or maybe their material was released on now-defunct record labels. Anyway, it's kinda old-school, a little ska and rocksteady in there, maybe reminiscent of Desmond Dekker on the earlier stuff, but they've got that good vocal harmonizin' going on like the groups you mentioned. Â And speaking of box sets in the previous post, there are a couple of Trojan Records box sets that could give you some more options. Trojan was, if DFA recalls correctly, one of the foundational Jamaican reggae labels. Â Mek fe dance, yes I. Quote
Skeezix Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Have you heard Toots in Memphis? Toots Hibbert reggaetizes R&B classics such as Knock on Wood and Hard to Handle with Sly and Robbie on riddim and Teenie Hodges and Eddie Hinton on guitar. Yes I! Quote
Camilo Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I've got a couple of the Trojan box sets that DFA was talking about on LP I might be able to burn to a CD for you if you want to check it out. And I second the Ethiopians recommendation. Quote
Ireneo_Funes Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Culture. Check out "Two Sevens Clash." Quote
JoeMack Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 YellowMan Israel Vibration  And if you've never seen Toots live, by all means check him out next time he's in the area. Quote
Ricardo_Montalban Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 I second Israel Vibrations & Culture  also... Clinton Fearon Gregory Isaacs (bad boy loverman 1&2) (more on the old timer rootsy side)  Quote
Skeezix Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 Dub Side of the Moon. Reggae inversion of classic Floyd. Quote
