You can talk about Darwin Awards all you want, but what I was thinking was this. Did this guy have even a rudimentary understanding of physics, and if he did, would it have made any difference? Does curiosity always trump common sense?

Well apparently it blows in this case.

But theoretically at least, you could make a lava lamp in a stovepot with some oil and wax and it would start to work if you put it on a stove burner on medium heat.

Yes clearly this is a call for additional research into high-speed homemade lava lamps. An inspiration, really.
