Chr1s Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Hey, I am wondering what easy to moderate routes are still in on Mount Hood in mid-september. Does the South Side (Hogsback) still see any ascents at this time of year? I know that this is not a good time of year, but since I am going to be driving down to Yosemite (from Vancouver,BC), I would hate to drive by without stopping for an ascent. I am unlikely to be passing by again in the near future..... Any info would be gratefully received. Thanks, Chris. Quote
sobo Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Hood, and especially the south side, sees ascents all year long. Go for it! Quote
Chr1s Posted September 3, 2004 Author Posted September 3, 2004 Thanks man, Do I need to work on my long jump skills for the 'shrund or is it easily bypassed? Cheers, Chris. Quote
sobo Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 If the slot is too long or too wide to mess with, go left and up at the hogback to the West Crater Rim route. I think it may have several different names. Someone from PDX will no doubt correct me. Mazama's Route, Old Chute, something like that. Quote
cluck Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Someone from PDX will no doubt correct me. Of course! When you get to the Hogsback, go around the bergschrund to climbers left. Once around, you can probably just head straight up to the summit (via Mazama Chute aka Old Chute) instead of traversing back across on the uphill side of the bergie. West Crater Rim is typically reached by passing on the west side (climbers left) of Crater Rock and skipping the Hogsback entirely. Quote
rbw1966 Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 The south side will not be all that aesthetic this time of year. Wear a helmet. Quote
TJD Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Saw some recent snow on the upper elevations. My experience, in late summer or fall this means slick snow on hard ice if there is any. And hit and miss rock and ice fall. The shrund usally can be by passed to the west. go early if a 10,000 foot plus freezing level is called for. Have Fun. Just For Your Info Cluck I did it your way in the fall once and my partner, almost took a football size chuck of ice, Do not be so sure of your self ! Quote
cluck Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Anywhere in the crater that time of year you take your chances with missles. I'm just saying the Old Chute is an alternative to the traverse between a rotten cliff and the bergie required to reach the Pearly Gates. Quote
Gaper_Jeffy Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 (edited) The KGW cam is zoomed in on the upper mtn right at this moment. It's showing the affects of the recent snow: http://www.timberlinelodge.com/conditions/kgwpop1.asp Here's what it looked like at 4:30 today (Friday): Edited September 3, 2004 by Gaper_Jeffy Quote
