specialed Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 The old man will be in town this weekend. Thought a day hike around Ross Lake might be cool. I know there is a ferry service that goes to different trailheads. However, I've got access to a canoe, and thought that might be funner. Are any of the trailheads accessible via a short canoe? Or are they too far away for a day trip? Quote
Greg_W Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 SE; Problem with using a canoe, unless you want to carry it down the trail from the highway to the lake (quite a hump), you have to canoe up Diablo Lk (about 1-2 hrs for a fair party) and arrange for a portage from Ross Lake Resort, which costs $25 each way. Check out Ross Lake's website; it's got good info and a map or two. Quote
specialed Posted August 9, 2004 Author Posted August 9, 2004 Yeah I was thinking that might be a problem. Maybe water taxi is the way to go. Quote
iain Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 If you take the water taxi it might be cool to get a ride to Desolation TH and do the hike up Desolation to visit the lookout tower where Jack Kerouac used to live. Apparently there are some great views up there, but I've never been up there myself. Quote
Dru Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 hiking on ross lake can be a lot of fun but don't forget your sandals cause it's a real pain when you get lake water in your stigmata! Quote
PONCHO&LEFTY Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 Rent a motor boat from the resort. My Dad and I did that and had a great time exploring the lake. Be careful if you don't canoe much, as the waves can get pretty big on Ross in the afternoon -(really, the wind whips up the gorge pretty good). Quote
