jon Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 We make every effort to protect our users from spam and viruses here, but unfortunately there are some things that are beyond our control. As many of you know there are things called Spambots that scour the internet looking for email addresses to spam. In addition to spam, there are people's computers who are infected with email that send out viruses with using fake email addresses. In this instance it looks like we have a little something of both. There is an email being sent out from somewhere (NOT US), pretending to be us warning you about a virus. It is HIGHLY possible that these people have taken your emails that you have posted at you own will and sent this email to you, trying to fool you. Here is the email: Subject: E-mail account security warning. Dear user, the management of Cascadeclimbers.com mailing system wants to let you know that, We warn you about some attacks on your e-mail account. Your computer may contain viruses, in order to keep your computer and e-mail account safe, please, follow the instructions. Please, read the attach for further details. The Management, The Cascadeclimbers.com team http://www.cascadeclimbers.com If you see this email erase it, and DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT. This email is NOT from us, I'm not sure where it is from but it is not being sent out by us. Unfortunately there is little we can do about this, complaining to the ISP will get us nowhere because this is such a widespread problem. If you have any questions about this please PM me or Tim. The real cc.com "management" Quote
jon Posted June 2, 2004 Author Posted June 2, 2004 I need to add a few things. If you get an email from us that is in Engrish, it's most likely not from us. Because we are getting so much spam ourselves, we are going to change our own email addresses, and we might post them in a way so you know it is from us but some spambot won't be able to figure it out. Secondly, and I cannot stress this enough, I HIGHLY discourage you from posting your email address and even cell phone numbers. You will get spammed to death if you do this. If you do try to do it in a way that someone can figure it out but not a computer searching the internet. Obviously your PMs are safe from spambots. Jon Quote
lummox Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 thanks for the headsup. and if you get anymore information just email me at president@whitehouse.gov Quote
Lambone Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 Jon, two questions: 1- What is Engrish? Some computer lingo that I don't know...or a typo, are you going to send us emails in a foreign lauguage? 2- Is it ok to post our email addresses in the user profiles, or is this "Spambotted? too? lummox, you crack me up man... jon Posted June 2, 2004 Author Posted June 2, 2004 Lammy, there is a certain region of this world were people can't pronounce the letter L, and instead say the letter R. You dig? Yes your profile can be read if you have it set to show your profile to non registered users. Quote
dbb Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 http://www.engrish.com Jon- There is basically no reason why we would ever expect an email from cascadeclimbers.com without asking for it, right? Quote
JoshK Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 thanks for the headsup. and if you get anymore information just email me at president@whitehouse.gov Well done. Quote
jon Posted June 4, 2004 Author Posted June 4, 2004 LOL! It turns out that it's the actual spammers themselves registering on the site, using the low numbers like 00000Cialis so that they show up at the top of the userlist, which helps their Google rankings or something. I'm going to go threw and delete any suspicious ones and post a strict warning at registration. Again please make sure to hide your email from them spambots. Quote
Lambone Posted June 4, 2004 Posted June 4, 2004 so if you put your email in as like "matt at hotmail" can they figure that one out, or no... Quote
