I got this recipe from a very old and falling apart Betty Crocker Cookie Cookbook my wife has had for ages. I modified it like a mad scientist, but the results were fantastic.

1/2 cup shortening (replaced 1/4 cup with Olive Oil)

2 squares (1oz each) of unsweetened chocolate

1 cup sugar (replace with brown sugar)

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup applesauce (home made from freezer)

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla (didn't have, so left out)

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup chopped nuts (used walnuts)

(Added 1/2 tsp powdered cinnamon)

(Added 1/2 cup raisins)

(Added 1 pkg of Maple Brown Sugar Quaker Instant Oatmeal)

Heat oven to 350 F. Heat oil and shortening in a large sauce pan on low heat. Add chocolate and stir until dissolved. Turn off heat and add remaining ingredients. Stir to mix. Spread in a greased and floured baking pan, 9x9x2 in. Bake until top springs back when touched, 35-40 min. (used glass dish and 40 min). Cut into 16 bars while still warm.

Eat while still warm. Enjoy.

Mmmmm Crisco. I was looking through that book for a recipe that didn't use shortning. I couldn't find one so I finally said, to heck with it, you only live once.

you can try creamy peanut butter as a shortening substitute.

Who else remembers the "Bloom county" where Milo falls in love with Betty Crocker's picture on the box, tracks her down at corporate HQ and finds out she's aged poorly and is a Tammy Faye lookalike? yellaf.gif
