in the spirit of the season if one were going to do a bit of chimney climbing tonight what would be the best choice of route?

 

Satans Slit at smoke bluffs springs to mind cause you can do it in hiking boots... might be tight squeeze in red suit and fake belly though.

Are there any chimneys in the natural world that are true shafts, like their namesake, rather than being open on one side?

 

The one I mentioned, Mines of Moira, is. It is a partially detached basalt column that is still locked into the rest of the columns. A headlamp is recommended for that pitch. It is dark, dirty, cold, and the only light you have is from the squeeze exit at the top. Very cool. cool.gif
