paramagic Posted November 1, 2003 Posted November 1, 2003 Anyone been up either of these Wrangell's and care to share some info? Quote
dkemp Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 I havent, but someday... Do a search on cc.com - you'll find a few threads on the subject. I did a car-tour of Alaska this summer with my spouse. We drove by Drum and Sanford - beautiful and inspiring. Doxey Quote
bubblebutt Posted November 18, 2003 Posted November 18, 2003 Was in Wrangell's earlier this year near Blackburn. PM me if you want some first hand info. Absolute expert on the area is Paul Klaus of Ultima Thule Outfitters. He is also the air taxi I used to get in on. He's a legendary character and somewhat difficult but when I saw him in June he had just done a ski traverese near Sanford and has some definate views about the difficulty of Blackburn. Awesome area but very remote. It isn't the Kalhitna!!! Quote
Scott_J Posted December 8, 2003 Posted December 8, 2003 "Absolute expert on the area is Paul Klaus of Ultima Thule Outfitters. He is also the air taxi I used to get in on. Don established his rep in the 50s and 60s, so his record seems rather moderate but of the same vein. Remember this though, "There old pilots, there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots. Quote
Fairweather Posted December 9, 2003 Posted December 9, 2003 I was talking to a government-official-who-shall-remain-nameless at Copper Center a couple years ago who told me that Paul Claus landed one of his planes on the summit of Blackburn, got out and walked around, then hopped back in and took off! I've also 'heard' that a pair of snowmobilers has summited Sanford in winter, or at least come close. Quote
