Lee Sheftel, 57, of Carbondale, Colorado, climbed the stout, 110-foot Rifle testpiece Present Tense (5.13d) after 14 days of effort this summer. "I gave myself 15 days to do the route," said Sheftel, a tax accountant and potentially the oldest American to have climbed the grade. A crowd of 30 to 40 onlookers -- a veritable "Leefest" -- gathered to watch and support Sheftel during his send.

it's neat and all but i thought the 54 year old Italian guy who climbed a 14b roof route barefoot and chalkless was cooler thumbs_up.gif

i don't want to redpoint 14b. it seems pretty boring! but i am impressed someone could do it barefoot and no chalk, 54 years old is even cooler. laugh.gif

Far be it from the humble Dr. Flash Amazing to dispute the encyclopaedic Dru Sprayshaw's grasp of the fax, however, if DFA's memory can this once be trusted, he would dare say the ascent in question was indeed sans chalk, but not sans shoes. Oui, ou non?

I am not afraid to admit when I was wrong.

I conflated two separate ascents.

A Spaniard climbed a 14b shoeless.

A 54 year old Italian climbed a 14a chalkless.

OK? thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif
