Billygoat Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 Man, I had a good time today, sending a new route and using my Yates Rocker! My mates flaked so it's a good thing to have a solo belay device. The Rocker runs free yet has a positive catch. I have only tried it in the anchored top rope configuration. I am thinking it might work in the lead up from the ground up with the rope anchored at the bottom and in the back pack idea. What do you guys like to use? Quote
Beck Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 thats the one. that's the smoothest feeding, smoothest catching, least damaging TRS device on the market today. thats the one to use. a piece of equipment i bought recently that ROCKS from europe as a self locking belay device/ emergency ascender all arounder is the Kong GiGi. climbs ropes easy, rapells, belays, also sets up as auto lock with one extra biner. just like many autolockers like the b-52 or the petzl reverso thingie... snoboy Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 Beck, we already heard about your GiGi... The Report on Belay devices for solo TR use also rated the Rocker favourably. Read all about it on this web page . Quote
Sphinx Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 Beck's previous chestbeat Now's the time to say it's all a troll, Beck. We're waiting.... Quote
Billygoat Posted September 14, 2003 Author Posted September 14, 2003 and now back to devices.... Quote
Beck Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 aren't we talking about the rocker (whoops I went off topic with that GiGI thing, even though you could TRS things with it!!!) but yes, the rocker is the shizzie, it works best in side by side comparision and the beta is out there on it as the posters have said... Quote
cracked Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 Wait, I thought the Gigi was the shizzle....now you're saying the rocking chair is the shizzle....tomorrow you'll be saying the GriGi is the shizzle, or was it the GiVerso? I'm confused. Quote
Beck Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 they are two completely different garanimals.... TRS device versus lightweight plaquette that is inexpensive as well. I'm not too confused Quote
Beck Posted September 14, 2003 Posted September 14, 2003 just got back from taking GiGi out tree climbing this morning to recover a stuck boomerang. I am happy to report she climbs well, she can do a great belay. she also lowers out of autolock by wiggling the "brake" biner nice and easy, inch at a time without extra gear... but I wouldn't take her to be my belay slave!! better get grandma or the rocker.... Billygoat Posted September 14, 2003 Author Posted September 14, 2003 Can't seem to figure out how to make the Rocker work in the lead up from the ground rope in the pack way At least not safely. Anyone try the Soloist or Silent Partner by Wren? Quote
IceIceBaby Posted September 15, 2003 Posted September 15, 2003 just stop this foolishness and go with the modify GriGri like he (or me) said it is the shizzle for solo lead Quote
Billygoat Posted September 15, 2003 Author Posted September 15, 2003 You mean the "DEATH MODIFIED GRI GRI" Quote

I've a Soloist I've used for solo Tr-ing (shameless plug-it's for sale right now!) It works pretty well with a smaller diameter line <10mm. I've not used it for solo lead - the whole won't hold backwards falls is a bit sketchy. According to comments here, and elsewhere, Silent Partners are sweet - but not cheap. Quote
Billygoat Posted September 15, 2003 Author Posted September 15, 2003 That's what I was thinking. The silent partner is better for lead soloing. Plus, I don't want to have to wear a chest harness. Quote
Beck Posted September 15, 2003 Posted September 15, 2003 i hear John Bachar is coming out with his version of solo aid devices soon! Quote
