Cpt.Caveman Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 I got some stashes. I am going to put them in containers this year to deflect harmfull effects from critters and other animals. Where do I get them? How much are they? Which ones are best? I want to stash stoves, rope, small rack, 2 harnesses. Quote

Beck Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 Cavey, if you're not stashing food use 5gal pickle buckets or go buy some bigass ammo cans. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted February 11, 2002 Author Posted February 11, 2002 Where do I get a pickle bucket? Ammo cans are real heavy... Quote
Norman_Clyde Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 Last year before a Sierras trip I priced bearproof containers at $75.00 apiece at REI. This compared unfavorably with $3.00 to rent from the rangers at Yosemite. These are made for food only and are only about 9 inches by 15 inches, kind of like a very big coffee can. I would not spring for anything this complicated to hold non-food items, which should not interest a bear anyway (unless they're pretty ripe with human scent). Maybe a big Rubbermaid plastic box will work. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted February 11, 2002 Author Posted February 11, 2002 I might stash small amounts of food in the summer months only. Mostly worried about Snafflehounds and other critters and not bears so much. [ 02-11-2002: Message edited by: Cpt.Caveman ] Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted February 11, 2002 Author Posted February 11, 2002 Does anyone have these? http://www.backcountrystore.com/ursackbearproofbag.htm are they any good? Quote
Bronco Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 buckets with the snap down lid work sweet for the critters, you can probably get them for free, if they do get trashed or lost or left behind they were free, and they are lightwieght. did I mention you might find some for free? Or really cheap at a hardware store if you need them right away. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted February 11, 2002 Author Posted February 11, 2002 How large are these buckets? Can I fit one in a pack? Quote
Bronco Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 5 gallons, probably just right for all the gear you are talking about. Just a big ol five gallon bucket with a lid. I have one you are welcome to. they are about 12" in diameter and 18 - 20" tall Quote
