Choriolis Posted June 14, 2003 Posted June 14, 2003 Hey everyone. I'm an avid outdoorsmen and I really want to start climbing but haven't a clue as to how to begin. Does anybody have any suggestions about how to break in to the sport. I'd much appreciate it. Quote
cman Posted June 14, 2003 Posted June 14, 2003 climbing gyms are a good place to start. you can learn to belay, practice your skills and meet other climbing folks pretty quick . also you could try the mountaineers/WAC for longer term outdoor instruction. Quote
Kiwi Posted June 15, 2003 Posted June 15, 2003 What kind of climbing? Rock or mountain? There are several classes available for both. You can learn to rock climb at the local climbing gyms (Stone Gardens or Vertical World). REI also has classes. For mountaineering, you can try the Mountaineers, Alpine Ascent International, Raineer Mountaineering Inc, Washington Alpine Club, Mountain Madness, or many others. Let me warn you, if you want to get into mountaineering right now, most of the classes are closed for registration. RMI, Mountain Madness, and AAI have classes open in the summer for a large fee. catbirdseat Posted June 16, 2003 Posted June 16, 2003 Show up at Exit 38 Trestle Parking Lot at 5 pm with rock shoes and a harness on Thursdays (directions: www.northbendrock.com). There is a regular bunch that hangs out after work (including the new King of Spray, JGowans). You can climb with us and ask all sorts of questions. You can also go to Pub Club on Tuesdays and meet lots of climbers and ask them all sorts of questions. Quote
Toast Posted June 16, 2003 Posted June 16, 2003 You'll want to learn some fundamentals first, like how to belay. Kiwi asks a pertinent question... what kind of climbing? If you're talking alpine mountaineering, you'll need other fundamental skills like learning to use an ice axe and learning how to navigate in the wilderness. Quote

thelawgoddess Posted June 16, 2003 Posted June 16, 2003 for technical rock, either take some classes or find someone who will take you out and show you the basics. preferably someone with extra gear if you don't already have some. at a minimum you'll probably want to have rock shoes, a harness, a chalk bag w/chalk, a belay device and a locking carabiner. send me a pm if you're really interested in getting out some time. i took a few newbie friends out last year and have extras of everything except for maybe shoes.
