Greg_W Posted February 11, 2003 Posted February 11, 2003 Here's a serious question; one that I hope will lead to a good, clean debate: Do you think that the U.S.'s nuclear arsenal has been a deterrent factor in the world over the past 50 years? Since the "Nuclear Age" is roughly 50 years old, has our position as a nuclear superpower been a moderating or destabilizing force in world politics? I believe that Truman declared the U.S. the "World's Policeman" in the 50's. How would the face of geopolitics be different today if Truman HADN'T gave the go order on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? What would our relationship be with the USSR if Kennedy hadn't responded strongly during the Cuban Missile Crisis? What about Kennedy's foresight in pushing the "Space Race"? Has Nixon's entres to China in the 70's helped, or hurt, us and our allies Taiwan? Reagan's strength and focused drive are credited with bringing Gorbachev back to the bargaining table in the mid-80's. Would we still be in a "Cold War" now? Discuss and debate freely. Quote
