caverpilot Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 I think I've asked this before but does anyone know of someone who has got *caught* skiing inside the crater at Mt. St. Helens or Crater Lake? Do they face prison time or just a fine? Is there an NPS person on this forum that can tell me the statute one is violating for doing so? Asking for a friend... Quote
JasonG Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 They have to fill out NEPA paperwork, which is a fate worse than death. 1 Quote
AlpineK Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Can't say what legal ramifications are. It appears being rescued after a fall and injury is possible http://www.traditionalmountaineering.org/News_Snowmobile_Helens_Accident.htm Of course the rangers didn't have to pull the snowmobile out too. In general day hiking around the crater is allowed, but I believe the crater is off limits. 1 Quote
Water Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 buddy buddy, surely the fine isn't more than the $700 MSHI crookedly charges, in cahoots with the FS, to access the crater! http://www.mshinstitute.org/explore/into-the-crater.html I don't think you'd see jail time. I believe the below section's are relevant, though I'm no lawyer. $500 fine / 6 months in jail. Which is funny, it's like giving a child a punishment of standing in the corner for 30 minutes, or cutting off one of their toes. $500 != 6 month in jail. The only way I could see getting 6 months in jail would be if you planned a commercial venture for a movie or something, or did some gross effort where you coordinated resources to go to the area and despoil it, do some evil kenevil type thing, ride a specialized dune buggy down crater lake's walls then it turns into a diesel sub and powers under water to explore, etc. https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/36/261.53 https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/36/261.1b https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/16/551 Quote
caverpilot Posted January 4, 2018 Author Posted January 4, 2018 My top bucketlist "caper" would be to ski inside the crater at Crater Lake, deploy a raft, paddle to Wizard Island, then ski from Wizard Island's summit... and.... fly away via helicopter?? sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Quote
AlpineK Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 Looks like a cool place for a couple runs. Landing in a hot air balloon would be even better Quote
