when i first came to cc. it was to monitor the rescue. i was looking for pics,routes.climbing time for ascent/ descent, nf routes ratings etc.....to learn mt hood , and their climb. i did not find much of that.it took a while.there was a lot of insider info that was useful to regulars i'm sure. i was watching the tv coverage and they were clueless.most, here were supportive to gawkers to a point..some stuff had to be shot down, but once you go to full spray mode ,its better to delete i guess.and redirect to spray. starting distinct threads would been great. hood beta/nf/pics/etc. you guys did great!!!!!

i watched 'all' (80 hrs) the coverage on tv, bouncing between cnn/fox/cnbc and others.,and i found that at first, the experts they used were lamest then became lamer and only at the end after a whole week did they finally have climbers talk about climbing. in the info vacuum, they started to speculate about anything.. and then propped up the story with the cost issue. after kj was found they had enough to talk about. all in all though , the coverage became better by the day to the point of being ok.it is very important to have real spokesmen for climbing early on. a good nf picture with routes and glaciers travel time etc would have given info to milk. if they got nothing to say they have to make it up.. fox is worst msnbc was best

twas the summer of '69 i popped 2 purple double domes and 15 min later entered the aquarium at stanley park in vancouver.all was cool until all the glass disappeared and i was walking among the fishies. sooo real. eventually the sounds were freaking me out and my bud swam away , so i left. people were looking at me really weird so i 'knew' i had to rebuild my standing in society so i hung out with 3-4 winos to start back at bottom. once i got the smartest wino to agree i was acceptable i was on my way.people were still freaking out(hair/pissed pants/muddy clothes?)but i didnt care. i then decided to walk back east. i remember i could see the prairies expanding for miles , then the great lakes and the evergreens and to the south east, the ny skyline, aaah. as i was walking i saw a construction zone and every time i walked by after going around the block i could see the whole building coming up. once i figured they were ok without me, i went to bed... the next day i woke up in a ditch , 100 miles east ,cause the water was coming up to my mouth. i dried in the sun and cleaned myself up a little, stuck my tumb out and the 2nd car stopped.he was going to calgary so i went ...

but nothing beats trying to get in the xmas spirit in 90% muslim contry. (indonesia) when its 95 outside.after looking for a tree in a 5 star hotel, we thought... fuck xmas and went shopping.

also spent one xmas in jail. we had a xmas tree but eggnog was fuckin lame..

spent last xmas on mt washington in a blizzard.was supposed to go to my moms special birthday/xmas super emo combo but phoned in sick. thats cold. i called her from the summit ,but didnt tell. hoping to repeat.this weekend

shishapangma 8025m sw face. a fantastic route.climbed for 3 days, cleared the crux at 7000m (30m wi4/5.9) but only got to 7300m where we spent last night in cave. next morning the wind was slapping us around. almost out of food and gas with zero support ( we were the only 2 guys on that side of the mountain) we turned back.we could have done it,i got rational and i paid for it . i cursed and fumed for weeks.i'm still pissed. they say it's better to retreat when you shouldnt then climb when you shouldnt.... 'tever . that's true if you enjoy the feel of your tail between your legs ... that route has 99% of what heaven is . thoughest bail.

alpamayo french direct.left at 4am with a swede i met in hz. led first 2-3 pitches, then swedo goes ahead and puts us too far right, in the next gully. after spending 16hrs in vertical sugar with no pro, we finally get to summit. unfortunately the ridge to go back to the ferrari for roped descent is impassable, contrary to guided reports.climbed down 100ft into a ice cave. beat each other up until next morning.had my watch on alarm every 20min for food/water/exercise. quite cold. 6 raps later were finally on glacier.30 hrs roundtrip,all intense.not the hardest but when things go wrong......
