? Westside Road / Tahoma Creak Trail Conditions
mtngt replied to ThomasLBeaumont's topic in Mount Rainier NP
The bridge is reopen, cleared by the engineers and work completed by MRNP crews. -
Leave em home, conditions are great and compacted with little to no postholing, Interglacier is in good shape with a good track, Emmons has several options with much success.
-
Park's web site says its due to open May 5th, same as road to Paradise/Nisqually entrance.
-
Appears the Glacier Basin trail is now also in deep trouble maybe another year would be a good consideration? http://mountrainierconditions.blogspot.com/ on the newest trail damage discovered this last weekend.
-
Everyone take a breath, news report today says main park road/nisqually entrance to open May 1 even while additional re-construction is taking place. In the meantime, the eastside is accessible for the hardy, and any wishing to do a westside route ought to simply consider taking a week's expedition via the westside road.
-
The road is open assuming you want to walk in, and you could permit to climb on the west side remaining in the park for the length of time on your permit. Day use is as you've stated on Sundays
-
19. I believe the road is closed, including to foot traffic.
-
One could always plan a longer, more expedition-like climb now, hike the road in from the park's N boundary, in to WRCG, then into Glacier Basin, up the Emmons, or over St. Elmo's and on to Lib ridge. There used to be a time when perhaps the more hardcore would have thought this kind of attempt/process attractive.

Same article states WR road due to open May 25th, DOT will determine opening for 410 sometime mid-April.

Re Carbon access, from the park's website 3/5/2007: Flooding from the Carbon River partially or completely destroyed two miles of road between the park entrance and Ipsut Creek Campground. In places, only culverts and road signs remain to remind visitors that new river channels used to be roadways. The historic Ipsut Creek Cabin was undermined when a channel of the river flowed directly beneath it. The windstorm in December toppled dozens of trees across the damaged roadway. And: The Carbon River Road will be rebuilt, at a cost of just under $1 million, to restore access to the Ipsut Creek Campground and the Carbon Glacier Trail. Work will be suspended from March 15 through August 6th to protect the endangered Northern Spotted Owl, Marbled Murrelet, and Bull Trout, which nest or spawn in the area during the summer. Meanwhile, trail crews have opened the roadway for hikers all the way to Ipsut Creek Campground. 410/WRCG: White River Road and Campground Damage to the White River Road and Campground was relatively minor. These facilities should be accessible by early June as usual, and the road to Sunrise should open in late June when snow plowing is completed.

The road into Carbon has been deeply decimated, the trail into Ipsut and beyond in some major trouble. 410 from the N boundary to WRCG is passable, albeit indeed makes for real climb/undertaking. Much of the damage likely won't be found or fixed until into the upcoming season, but permits and passes are available to anyone desiring a commited process.
-
Road to WRCG is generally not open until mid/late May,as the DOT gets 410 open. The WRCG road sustained damage in Novemeber floods, may take it longer to open depending on the park's logistics and budget.
-
At least there will be a body rescue coming!
-
The road at Mather Y/White River is scheduled to close October 10th for the season, connector on 410 from Crystal cutoff/N Park boundary will close as soon as DOT closes Cayuse/Chinook pass, usually happens in November.

Was up on Curtis Ridge 2 weeks ago, have quite current pics of route/LR, PM me if you want pics. Both LR, Willis, Upper Russel were a bowling alley of constant rock/icefall, no water above 7500ft along Curtis, crossing of Carbon looked challenging to say the least. csrh at oz dot net

Trail update from 5/25 shows no snowcover from Ipsut to the Carbon bridge.

From the DOT website: "SR 123 is closed indefinitely from the Cayuse Pass summit to just north of Stevens Canyon Road because of a rockslide and road washout. Mount Rainier and WSDOT hope to reopen SR 123 later this summer."

Its been so long since I purchased my Garmin I'd forgotten only Garmin products work, Garmin has a Mapsource/National Parks West, includes Rainier.
-
National Geographic has Nat Park series, one includes Rainier, less than $50, downloadable to your GPS, try www.topo.com

I'd like to get at least $250 for these so I can still afford new boots that fit. Men's 10.5/44; Women's 11.5. Store would not give me my money back as their store poilcy is 30-day return. Anyone with a realistic offer will not be denied.
