Well shit, I guess if we're all at fault for the oil spill, then we all need to take responsibility to make sure the industry is regulated to the point where this never happens again. The only entity we have any means of control over is our elected government. While free market dumbshits we're telling us the industry could regulate themselves and corporate lobbyists we're writing their own rules, many of us we're reducing our consumption and demanding stronger rules, and opposing new drilling. So, now that the need for stronger regulation and restriction of the oil industry is clear and it's obvious that the government is the only entity with the accountable authority to implement and enforce new rules, we look forward to you personally sacking up and taking personal responsibility for calling for stronger regulations of existing operations and stronger rules for new projects. Anything less would be pure hypocrisy.

Instead of treating these small, loosely connected, marginalized minorities like the criminals they are, the neocons treated them like the second coming of the Huns and undertook actions that have predictably increased their number and their ideological reach. What you've described here as a defense of fanaticism, capitulation, or whatever is actually an effort to formulate a more appropriate, effective response; opposed to one in which all aspects of the Muslim faith are conflated with extremism and violence and the historical roots current Mideast conflict and America's role in the genesis of these groups is obscured in favor of a metaphysical lurking Mohammedan leviathan. In other words, horrific violence directed against innocents is only worth investigating when it's directed against Westerners and creating a phantom menace serves the broader geopolitical goals. The point is, and has always been, that there is nothing inherently more backward or more violent about Islam than there is about Christianity. Some of the positions you've taken on this topic, quotes from the Koran and the anecdote on the Barbary pirates above, etc, would suggest you don't hold with this view. The adoption or reactivation of religious extremism always occurs in political and socio-economic contexts (endogenous and exogenous). You want to work to reform Muslim societies in the grips of religious extremism? Fine, concentrate on the real world grievances that fuel these movements and support existing secular movements and alternatives within those countries (and not just the ones that support your geopolitical and ideological project). Blaming ancient texts for contemporary problems obfuscates real existing conditions and will continue to be counter-productive.
