Hey, I'm looking for the 20% off code for Sierra Trading Post. I had it a couple of days ago, and now I can't remember where I found it. I have the free shipping riddles, just need the code.

Hello, I have heard people reference "the book" when discussing routes on climbs like The Brothers, etc. What's the best climbing book for the Olympics?
-
I have last year's model and they're great. They're very very comfortable, and seem to be a more "serious" boot than you can get from other manufacturers at this price point.
-
Yeah, I think I've decided on the Vista. Mapping, altimeter, compass, and all the standard GPS features. Now I'm just waiting for Buy.com to send me one of their 10% discount codes!

JRCO, (or anybody) Where do you enter the shipping riddle answer? I just placed a big order with them and didn't get the 20% OR free shipping. That sucks. But will make future orders.. Thanks

good waterproof sleeping bag cover / overbag
undermind replied to undermind's topic in The Gear Critic
Hey that Bibler Winter Bivy looks pretty cool. Simple and light. I don't know how it would compare to the montbell UL covers. They use 2 layer Gore. But the Bibler is about as light and much cheaper. I know the epic fabric is a bit of a step down from event, but can anyone comment on it? vs Gore? Basically, I'm not going to be actually IN the elements with it, unless for emergency. I don't even mind if the outside gets damp with condensation, as long as there is not any buildup on the inside. -
good waterproof sleeping bag cover / overbag
undermind replied to undermind's topic in The Gear Critic
mattp, I'm not looking for a bivy. My original post says nothing about a bivy. I just want a cover/overbag. I always use a tent, but still wake up with damp shell fabric. It's basically because the bag is ultralight and has no water resistant shell fabric. So I can afford a little more weight for water resistence. But not a lot because I still need to carry a tent. So.. What I need is something lightweight that will keep my actual sleeping bag dry inside. I don't need any fancy structure like in a a lot of bivy's. -
Sweatinoutliquor, can you explain? I don't quite get what you're saying here. Eastsider, you mention you can "track" on the map. Can you at any time pull up the map on the GPS screen and show the path that you have taken? JoshK, what areas can you get 24k maps for in WA? Do you have a link? Also, I've read that you absolutely can only load maps from Garmin onto the GPS. And these seem to cost $99. Pretty harsh. I've seen a Western US topo map cd. Are there any alternatives to the $99 cd? At this time, I only need WA. Beyond would be nice, but I think it would be nice to pay smaller prices for more focused areas. I'm only interested in topo maps.

Thanks for the reply's, good info. I've been considering the usage I would get out of a GPS.. And the main thing that comes to mind is helpfulness in whiteout conditions. But I don't plan on having a lot of that. So I think a way that I can make a purchase more justified is to have altimeter functions. That way I could at least want to take it on all of my backpaking trips so that I can view elevation gain/loss and charts. This is completely for fun factor. I can't think of another reason to bring a GPS along if I'm never going to leave the trail. So that leads me to a few models. The Garmin Geko 301 ($180) and the Garmin Vista ($230). So basically, it's a matter of whether I want to spend $50 extra for mapping capabilities. As far as I can tell, both of these models are similar in GPS features. Both have altitude and compass abilities, which has become my main focus. So maybe someone can help me get a grasp on just what the mapping functions are. Do the mapping units allow you to pull up actual visual tracking ON the map of your routes taken? And I mean on the GPS screen in the field, not at home on the PC. What CAN you do with the map that's useful? If the map is there to just "look at", then I don't see how that will beat out my paper map. Will mapping be more useful in sea kayaking? It seems it might be a similar situation..

So this is where I picked up that Ebates bug! I was wondering .. I would suggest not clicking the above link. I did, and now Ebates is always popping up and taking me off my current page. Add/Remove Programs does not get rid of it.

Sorry, checked that link and it takes you to the homepage.. If you put "intuition" in the search field, it will come up with Morrow liners, which are made by intuition. They are labeled as snowboard liners for what it's worth.

what's the easiest way of telling whether a pair of Alpha's have the thermo liner? Thanks
-
I'm wary of paying for barometric altimeter function. After all, elevation is a component of any GPS unit regardless of price from what I understand. I think the advantage of having altimeter built in is the ability to check altitude at any time, whether or not you're locked on to enough satelites to calculate elevation. What I am curious about is whether the units with built in altimiter are the only ones that can track and graph elevation gain and loss. And also, can anyone comment on the ability to lock onto enough satelites to calculate elevation around WA in tree cover? Like old growth forest for example..

Well, I think I'll get a GPS. I'm at that stage where I'm vulnerable to spending a lot more money. When I start researching, I start with the basic models and always end up working up the ladder and spending double the cash. So.. I'll be doing basic mountaineering and off-trail stuff mainly around WA. I don't know a ton about the features, so I'm not sure what I can't live without. I'm questioning the need for mapping capability at this point. I will always have a topo map, which I know will be more detailed than what I'll see on the GPS screen. So I'm leaning toward no mapping. But then the thought of future kayaking creeped in.. Are there any major things that the basic mapping models ($175) are missing from the more expensive ones ($350)? And any reason B/W versions would be inferior to color? Thanks. And by the way, I'm not looking for a discussion about map & compass vs GPS. I always carry a map & compass.

I wear 11.5 street shoes, and own 12's in the Scarpa Alpha's. Perfect fit. This is with Smartwool Mountaineering socks with liners. I love the fit on these boots. I've tried Koflach's, Lowa's, and Vasque ICE 9000's. The Alpha's are the only ones to fit my wide feet. I'm selling my Vasque ICE 9000's by the way, size 12 brand new.

Wanted: Buy.com 10% off code (GPS!) [Delete]
undermind replied to undermind's topic in On-Line/Mail-Order Gear Shops
Brianna, Thanks. I did look at a few of those deal-watcher websites, but unfortunately none that I found had the 10% off coupon code. It adds up on a big purchase... -
Hey, I got an email from Buy.com this morning with a 10% off code, and like an idiot I quickly deleted it. Then I realized I'm buying a GPS. Does anybody have the coupon code?? Thanks!

I'm looking for a fairly lightweight waterproof sleeping bag cover. Montbell makes some 2 layer Goretex covers under 10 oz. Wild Things and Integral Designs both make Event covers, but are heavier. I've got a good lightweight bag that doesn't have a W/P shell, and would like to wake up with a dry outer shell on my bag. Thanks

Maybe I can revive this thread.. Anybody know which is stiffer between the Kayland Multitraction and the Garmont Towers? And also, taking a step up from these two, anybody have any experience with the Garmont Mountain Lite Karbo GTX or the Kayland K1?

Outer Shell Pants: Marmot vs. Lowe vs. Millet
undermind replied to undermind's topic in The Gear Critic
Yeah, I was apprehensive about spending the extra cash on the Millet's, but I decided to do it. But of course since I decided to "think about it", I missed out and they ran out. I was pretty irritated.. But I'm going to get the Lowe's with the EVent fabric. I think it will be a good choice. Thanks for the offers on the pants too. You've got me pretty tempted with those Marmot Alpinist pants.. -
Hello, here's another vs. thread! I don't see much talk on pants here or in the archives, so thought I would ask. I need a pair of shell pants for volcano slogs, and general winter use. Here are a few specific pants I'm considering: -Marmot Climbing Pant: 3 layer proprietary, 1 lb 9oz -Lowe Alpine Evolution or Expedition: 3 layer proprietary 1 lb 2 oz -Millet Stretch Gore-Tex XCR pant: don't know # of layers, 1lb 11oz The Lowe's are the lightest, but I know nothing about their proprietary ceramic-impregnated waterproof material. The Millet's are the heaviest, but the only ones that use Gore-Tex. I don't know how many layers, but I'm sure they're a worthy pant. All are full zip, all have suspenders, etc. They are all similar in style, now it just comes down to waterproofing materials, name dependency. comments??

Koflach... Shell Size Smaller than Liner??
undermind replied to undermind's topic in The Gear Critic
I have read your quote in a few sites, but I have also read from a reputable source that the shells only come in whole sizes, but the liners are true half sizes. So the 7.5 and 8 liners both come in an 8 shell, but are still sized differently. Gosh, if Koflach actually listed a REAL phone number... Somebody's GOT to have their customer service number! -
I recently purchased some Koflach Degre's and am questioning the fit. I normally wear 11.5-12 US, but I ended up getting 13's because the 12's felt too snug. Anyways, I pulled out the liner and noticed that the shell says 12 inside. So the liner and the box say 13, but shell says 12. Is this normal??
