Sorry, checked that link and it takes you to the homepage.. If you put "intuition" in the search field, it will come up with Morrow liners, which are made by intuition. They are labeled as snowboard liners for what it's worth.

what's the easiest way of telling whether a pair of Alpha's have the thermo liner? Thanks

I'm wary of paying for barometric altimeter function. After all, elevation is a component of any GPS unit regardless of price from what I understand. I think the advantage of having altimeter built in is the ability to check altitude at any time, whether or not you're locked on to enough satelites to calculate elevation. What I am curious about is whether the units with built in altimiter are the only ones that can track and graph elevation gain and loss. And also, can anyone comment on the ability to lock onto enough satelites to calculate elevation around WA in tree cover? Like old growth forest for example..

Well, I think I'll get a GPS. I'm at that stage where I'm vulnerable to spending a lot more money. When I start researching, I start with the basic models and always end up working up the ladder and spending double the cash. So.. I'll be doing basic mountaineering and off-trail stuff mainly around WA. I don't know a ton about the features, so I'm not sure what I can't live without. I'm questioning the need for mapping capability at this point. I will always have a topo map, which I know will be more detailed than what I'll see on the GPS screen. So I'm leaning toward no mapping. But then the thought of future kayaking creeped in.. Are there any major things that the basic mapping models ($175) are missing from the more expensive ones ($350)? And any reason B/W versions would be inferior to color? Thanks. And by the way, I'm not looking for a discussion about map & compass vs GPS. I always carry a map & compass.

I wear 11.5 street shoes, and own 12's in the Scarpa Alpha's. Perfect fit. This is with Smartwool Mountaineering socks with liners. I love the fit on these boots. I've tried Koflach's, Lowa's, and Vasque ICE 9000's. The Alpha's are the only ones to fit my wide feet. I'm selling my Vasque ICE 9000's by the way, size 12 brand new.

Vasque ICE 9000 boots, size 12 US. Brand new in box. $280 They are a half size small for me. I would say this boot fits more like a 11 1/2. Awesome boot. Comparison review against leading mountaineering boots (Vasque was highest rated): http://www.climbing.com/equipment/boots218/index1.html

Wanted: Buy.com 10% off code (GPS!) [Delete]
undermind replied to undermind's topic in On-Line/Mail-Order Gear Shops
Brianna, Thanks. I did look at a few of those deal-watcher websites, but unfortunately none that I found had the 10% off coupon code. It adds up on a big purchase... -
Hey, I got an email from Buy.com this morning with a 10% off code, and like an idiot I quickly deleted it. Then I realized I'm buying a GPS. Does anybody have the coupon code?? Thanks!

I'm looking for a fairly lightweight waterproof sleeping bag cover. Montbell makes some 2 layer Goretex covers under 10 oz. Wild Things and Integral Designs both make Event covers, but are heavier. I've got a good lightweight bag that doesn't have a W/P shell, and would like to wake up with a dry outer shell on my bag. Thanks

messed up on those images.. You will have to cut and paste the URL's, or I can email pictures. Price is negotiable.

Maybe I can revive this thread.. Anybody know which is stiffer between the Kayland Multitraction and the Garmont Towers? And also, taking a step up from these two, anybody have any experience with the Garmont Mountain Lite Karbo GTX or the Kayland K1?

Outer Shell Pants: Marmot vs. Lowe vs. Millet
undermind replied to undermind's topic in The Gear Critic
Yeah, I was apprehensive about spending the extra cash on the Millet's, but I decided to do it. But of course since I decided to "think about it", I missed out and they ran out. I was pretty irritated.. But I'm going to get the Lowe's with the EVent fabric. I think it will be a good choice. Thanks for the offers on the pants too. You've got me pretty tempted with those Marmot Alpinist pants.. -
Grivel Winter Cap Helmet with 2 visors, and neck guard for ice. Pearly white with Grivel logo on each side. Brand new in box, with original receipt for $130. Selling for $75 PM me or email at brvheart5@yahoo.com

Hello, here's another vs. thread! I don't see much talk on pants here or in the archives, so thought I would ask. I need a pair of shell pants for volcano slogs, and general winter use. Here are a few specific pants I'm considering: -Marmot Climbing Pant: 3 layer proprietary, 1 lb 9oz -Lowe Alpine Evolution or Expedition: 3 layer proprietary 1 lb 2 oz -Millet Stretch Gore-Tex XCR pant: don't know # of layers, 1lb 11oz The Lowe's are the lightest, but I know nothing about their proprietary ceramic-impregnated waterproof material. The Millet's are the heaviest, but the only ones that use Gore-Tex. I don't know how many layers, but I'm sure they're a worthy pant. All are full zip, all have suspenders, etc. They are all similar in style, now it just comes down to waterproofing materials, name dependency. comments??

Koflach... Shell Size Smaller than Liner??
undermind replied to undermind's topic in The Gear Critic
I have read your quote in a few sites, but I have also read from a reputable source that the shells only come in whole sizes, but the liners are true half sizes. So the 7.5 and 8 liners both come in an 8 shell, but are still sized differently. Gosh, if Koflach actually listed a REAL phone number... Somebody's GOT to have their customer service number! -
I recently purchased some Koflach Degre's and am questioning the fit. I normally wear 11.5-12 US, but I ended up getting 13's because the 12's felt too snug. Anyways, I pulled out the liner and noticed that the shell says 12 inside. So the liner and the box say 13, but shell says 12. Is this normal??
-
dbconlin, thanks for the tip, I'll try it tonight. I tried my foot in the shell, but didn't measure. Couloir, Moosejaw has 10's in the Verticals right now on sale for $314 plus 5% off that. If you want to try them on in person, I would try Feathered Friends in Seattle.. There is a member here on the boards from FF named "featheredfriends" of all things. You could PM him. But it seems like not a lot of people are carrying the Verticals right now. You might want to call Marmot Mountain in Bellevue WA also. But then you wouldn't be in sales-tax- free Oregon anymore!
-
See, that actually makes sense! So Dru, if you take out the liner, your shell actually says 10.5 as well?
-
Well, I know that Koflach uses the same shell for the half size below. (11.5 and 12 liner both use the same shell) But doesn't make sense to me in this case. But I don't know, maybe it's perfectly normal... I tried to call Koflach today but the # on the website doesn't connect you to a live person. What seems the most peculiar is that I tried on last year's pair (new old stock) at Marmot Mountain that were 11.5's and they fit me perfectly. That IS my normal size, so that makes sense. I just find it disturbing that I ended up getting 13's. Now I question if I truly am getting the right fit. The liner is so snug it's hard to tell. I'm going to start a specific sizing thread..
-
Thought I might stir up this topic again... So did you get the Trango Extremes? Also, dirtwigle, you referred to them as "Trango". Do you have the Yellow ones? Just making sure we are truly talking about the Extremes. I'm looking for a good "leather" mountaineering boot. I have plastics, which will be good for multiple days on the glacier. But if I'm doing an overnight summit on Rainier or other 14ers for example, am I going to freeze my toes? And how about waterproofness? Thanks
-
Well, I got the Degre's. The weight and slogging comfort influenced that decision. I got size 13's US. I normally wear 11.5/12's. But the 12's felt way tight. Not in length necessarily, but all around my foot. I wore Smartwool Mountaineer socks with liners when trying on the boots. I couldn't believe I was trying on 13's, but they felt better. They are still quite snug around my foot. One thing I noticed is that the liner tongue says 12.5 UK / 13 US. But when I took the liner out, there is a 12 stamped on the inside of the shell. Is this normal? A size 13 liner and 12 shell?
-
Hey, I got some Koflach Degre's today. I normally use leathers, but I bought some Charlet Vasak Flexlock crampons just so I could use them on most any boot, including plastics. The Koflach's are size 13, and the crampon just doesn't extend long enough. Does anyone know if there are longer linking bars available? Otherwise I'm up the creek! Thanks
