I was so impressed by the top 10 reading list I thought I would ask for help on selecting text for a Trad/Alpine rock class I am helping with. Yes of course Freedom of the Hills and John Long's newer anchor book. But what about something that covers generally - something that could be used as a text book. What book would you tell your newest climbing partners - the one that can top rope or maybe even clean - but wants to learn to lead?..... (appreciate all feed back)

Okay - I have never been up on this side of Rainier before. Looking to do the route with 3 pitches of snow. Wondering, is it is snow or ice up there and if anyone has been up recently and can share with me what they used for protection (other than bug spray and sunscreen). Any info appreciated - including where to eat on the way home...... Thank you

For those looking to know, 7/25 we took crampons and ice axes and used them both. Also glad to have taken along the swimsuit for a dip in Bench lake - the water was perfect.

what about crampns. Are they needed in the morning on the approach for the snow?

Not sure what you are using them for or why. So not sure if this is a help or not. I use thin coton ones ice climbing. They fit under my base layer, are not bulky - and no one knows I have them on. Okay - one last question - does Ellinor technically have a glacier on the back side of it?

By chance do you know if the camping area near there is open - either the free on to the east (right turn - and about 2-4 miles down the road) or the one that's right at the road - with all the trees that's a quick turn on the left. I heard rumors the free one had been damamged by storms - any info??

Anybody have any beta on access this time of year, either from the south (is the road open past bachelor?) or from the north. Is there a snow park to the north that would allow for a winter approach? thanks for the info and time.
