It's not that uncommon for a big pear-shaped biner to get into this postion (or more likely rotated 180 degrees from what's shown in the photo) when belaying off a belay loop. All that up and down motion allows the biner to rotate, and I found that the knurled locking barrel often 'caught' on the belay loop, thus putting it in a postion to be crossloaded. That's one reason I switched to using a small locker when I finally bought a harness with a belay loop.

I've got a great deal here on some Northface watches and Rolex coats, too.

Poor Dan really is challenged. He's still having problems with his dates and times, and for someone so obsessed with accuracy he fails miserably. Look at the date/time on his splash page....it's about 2 months in the future.

Good question. An acquaintence of mine is an officer on container ships that dock in various Chinese ports. One of the highlights is the 'merchants' who come abord with various wares from 'the factory'. Who really knows of those TNF jackets and packs are factory 2nds, over runs that ran out the back door, or true knock offs that were sewn by the janitor's mother and 9 year old daughter based on a pattern from a genuine article they disassembled and copied.

There were a ton of Chinese (and Korean and other Asian) knock off products at the OR Summer Expo this year. That stuff was one of my primary goals to see going into the rat maze. It *is* amazing to see how similar some of those products are to the things the major manufacturers copied from some small company somewhere else...and then tweaked slightly to mfg themselves.

Thad, his friend Mark, and I headed off to the City for the weekend. Spent Saturday climbing some of the fun classics in the Inner City: Raindance, Mystery Bolter, Too Much Fun, and some other swag. Sunday we headed off to Steinfell's Dome and did a couple long easy slab routes. Here are some photos of the 5.8 route..forgot the name and don't have the guidebook here at work. It's nothing special, but the views of the surrounding area from the route are spectacular. bigger The three of us simulclimbed past 4 or 5 sets of chains to the base of the vertical 'headwall' about 3/4 of the way up. This is the first little step about 1/4 up the route. (the route actually goes around this to the right) bigger bigger This vertical section (3/4 up) is the part circled in the next photo. It runs up a quartz dike and makes for a nice change of pace from the slab plab. bigger bigger bigger bigger

Nice choice of words.... Nintendo Plans One-Handed Joypad Nintendo has unveiled the controller for its new Revolution game console. In a demonstration at the Tokyo Game Show, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata showed off a wireless controller that closely resembled a TV remote control. Motion sensors on the controller translate its movements into game action, allowing it to be used as a virtual sword, baseball bat or much more. This one-handed innovation is expected to take Nintendo into a new market, that of m- and x-rated interactive video fantasy games. article continues... web page

Ding! Ding! good work. news story Bush 'caught short' at UN summit It's a situation anyone could find themselves in - having to answer the call of nature in the middle of an important meeting. But when you are the US president, at a gathering of more than 150 world leaders, it is even more tricky. While talk at the UN world summit was focused on terrorism and internal reform, George W Bush appeared to have been caught short. And, he is said to have turned to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for advice. "I think I may need a bathroom break? Is this possible?" a Reuters news agency photographer caught him writing in a note to Ms Rice. The photograph, and Mr Bush's apparent request for permission to pee, has been the subject of discussion on a number of satirical websites. President Bush was among monarchs, presidents and prime ministers for the opening of the three-day summit, marking the 60th anniversary of the UN. In a speech, he urged the UN to pursue meaningful reforms to allow it to meet modern challenges and said the US was committed to helping overcome poverty.
