what you may not know is melville had a view of mt greylock (the tallest mountain in massachusetts) from the porch of his home, arrowhead. the view of mt greylock covered in snow in winter is said to have reminded melville of a great white whale, and thusly partly inspired him to write the now famous tale. i couldn't find a picture in google image search but i've seen it with my own eyes and yeah it's kinda cool.

they should check with the locals (sherpas) first. they consider teh mt sacred and recently banned nude climbing.

i think the ex-military dudes reap some profit, which i don't see a problem with. why shouldn't they be paid what they're worth? i might have stayed in the army if the pay hadn't been such crap. of course i'm glad i'm not over there killing unarmed civilians which doesn't sound very appealing.

just this morning i was reading up on Kim Philby and other true spy stories that inspired tinker tailor soldier spy yeah i used to randomly read encyclopedias when i was a kid too. we had one not very good encyclopedia called "the treasurehouse of knowledge" - gotta love the title. it was really interesting because it was printed just before WWII and it was fascinating to read about Hitler before he became infamous, and also the Maginot Line when it was still considered invincible.

i have kind of a short attention span but one thing i like to do is like wikipedia surfing where i take a topic i know a little about but most of what i know is wrong so i look it up in wikipedia and set myself straight and then i click the crossreferences and stumble upon lots of interesting stuff, mostly history kind of things.
