  1. Ive been taking singulair since March for Asthma and found it increased how well I breath each morning when I get up. Ive put on a few pounds, but never considered singulair as the problem, since I am on a zillion different steriods and I havent been as active since the asthma started. I guess I would rather deal with a few xtra pounds in exchange for breathing. Singulair doesnt work for many people. Did it help with your allergies? I dont think it does much for me in that sense. Loratidine doesnt do crap for me. Im finding the zyrtec to be a god-send and hopefully keep me outta the hospital this fall!
  2. Sadly enough, I will likely not make it out west AT ALL this fall . I am incredibly bummed. I am going to aim for a trip next spring (unless I get a job out there sooner!). Have fun making out!
  3. I have been to a few of them but I haven't met you. My climbing partners were a little scared off by the crowds and bongo drums so I wasn't around for very long. I have a photo with both Iain and Carolyn in it Isnt that curious?!
  4. Good choice. While I have never made it up to the other thing, the smith shindig is approx. 1 billion times cooler. but maybe everyone from the other thing makes it down to smith too. iain- have we met at smiff during any of these gatherings? Ive been flying out there to partake in the festivities since its birth . Good times! I know this is the official "rope up thread", so we might want to start a new thread for smith. Might I suggest Either Oct 20-22 or Oct 27-28? Will, could you make it then? I have no idea if I can actually attend either of those dates. as of August 23rd, Im pretty much unemployed. Unless I find work that keeps me on a chain, either weekend would be fine. -c
  5. Christ Almighty! Is it really that time of the year already? I was planning on heading out west late august/early sept. Unfortunately, now I probably wont be able to head out in that direction until mid to late October. So tuff-fest it will likely be. Who knows, maybe I will actually drive out there with all my shit and stay this time! I sure will miss the l'worth rope up Have fun!

    Drug Testing

no, its a clinical trial. Before taking the test I signed a zillion forms, one of them regarding privacy. I am just a number.

    Drug Testing

After continued research I DID find out one of my medications causes a false positive. I called the Mayo clinic/research study. They did some searches and came up with some of the same stuff. Soooo, we are going to repeat the test and then they do "olympic" style testing to determine which specific drug is causing the positive result. The other two people who this happened to are taking the same medication as me. Glad it got figured out and hope I never have to take a drug test for a job - or I will be screwed. And thanks for the offer, fern. I think I will pass this time around - call it denial!

    Drug Testing

Thanks ams. Shit, I dont even know how to do a search for something like this. I keep getting "ways to pass a urine test" on every site I search. I will keep trying since I am so bothered by this. I do think it was a false positive. I am going to try and have one of my dr's order a test here. if it comes out negative, the Mayo clinic needs to know. Though I might not be able to participate in the study, they should know that their tests are unreliable. What I have found is that the drug is usually undetectable within 4-5days. Like I said, other than the numerous inhaled steroids, allergy meds, beer, and nicotine in the past few days - months-years, Im clean. Maybe the combination of the above creates this "class" of drugs. Hmmmpppffff!
  9. You belong in Oregon. No Shit! Im trying hard! I didnt get the job with the Bend Park and Rec dept, sadly enough. I think it was an inside job! I am searching on a daily basis. I have faith something will come along in the near future. Hell, Im practically packed!
  10. Sometimes its a good idea to use tape. The weather on the N.Shore of lake superior can change in mere seconds, and the reality of escaping a route could quite possibly be swimming accross the lake. The wind can literally fling you around and not allow you back on route. Never climb a route WAAAAY above your ability, in hurricane type winds, while the person who set the route over 30yrs ago is sitting there watching you. Always climb with someone you trust can help you out of a sticky situation! Beer is good!!! - NO! Beer is VERY GOOD!

    Drug Testing

Where better to ask than here?!?! Those of you who know me, know that I smoke. Since this asthma diagnosis in Feb, I have been trying to quit - numerous attempts, with little success. I found a trial study at the Mayo Clinic that would be perfect for me, and maybe even allow me to contribute a tad to society. its quite a commitment, driving 2hrs (each way) once a week. Anyway, I felt it was well worth the commitment and investment. Today was my first visit and I had to do a urine sample. Mind you, other than beer and cigarettes, Im pretty much a goody-two-shoes. So I have never done any drugs. I tested positive for benzodiazepine! THis would be like ativan, muscle relaxers, etc. Im on a lot of inhaled steroids for the asthma and a month or so ago I took some cough syrup with codeine. Their pharmasist doesnt believe any of that could cause a positive result. My pharmasist doesnt believe so , either. So what the fuck? Is someone secretly dropping pills in my drinks? Is there some type of food or herb that might cause this? Could their test be unreliable (this happened to someone else last week, I guess)? Im pissed , perplexed , and disappointed . I can go back in 30 days and try again. Knowing I dont take drugs and unsure what could cause that result makes me question spending 4 hrs in the car just to get denied again. Anyone else have a problem like this before?
  12. Unless you have sabretooths....then it doesnt matter. Like your friend says, they do it all.
  13. I think spiders are some of the kewlest creatures on earth! Snakes - freak the SHIT outta me! even the gardner snakes creep me out. Im getting the shivers just thinking about it. Yuck!
  14. Aint that the truth! I went down to see how the construction was going. Im actually pretty impressed. I even got to shake the hand of a multi-millionare!

    Missing Climbers

supertop This thread is starting to get updates and responses from friends and the rangers.
  19. dude-I think chaps moved outta state!
  20. yes, waivers will be signed. Ive spoken to a few people in my area who have done similar things. As long as I am not part of building the wall, I have no liability there. Its a 60 million dollar company. I think if anyone was going to sue someone for anything, the advertising firm would get it, since all I have to my name is my cat and a 1995 geo prizm.
  21. Someone passed my name onto an advertising firm in downtown mpls. They are building a climbing wall in their office for a "partners" going away party. He is going to Nepal for six months. They want to hire me to basically keep them safe as they climb. They bought 800 bucks worth of gear (harnesses, helmets, ropes, climbing holds, biners, etc) and their contracter - whoever that is- will be building the wall next week. After looking over the site I am all over it as long as I get to make sure the anchors are secure and I personally have an area to run if the wall tips over . I asked the going guiding rate. After seeing WHO they are, I now wish I had asked for double. Since this is a disposable event, I will also be acquiring all the gear at the end of the party. As soon as I got on the elevator, I started laughing my ass off. What a great time this will be!!!!!

    Missing Climbers

Sadly, to dispel some rumor I saw started on supertopo, they have not been rescued or found. After reading this rumor, I called Talkeetna and spoke to a woman involved with the search. I was suprised she gave me the information she did. As of right now, the summit area is in white out conditions. It looks like the weather system will stay that way for another 24-36hrs. They are all very distraught out there (definately sensed it in her voice), but doing what they can. If you want information about the search you can contact the park directly @ 907-733-9103. I will likely keep checking in with them the next few days, as one of Karen's climbing partners is a good friend of mine and is not able to be reached easily or get regular updates at the moment. All my positive energy that they are still with us!

    BEND

Well thanks for the encouragement. I think Im pretty much committed to a move out there - whether it be for this job or another. I should hear from them about whether or not they want to grant me an interview by the 9th. *Fingers crossed* I guess I would just drive out there and stay at the grasslands for a month or so, then fly back to mpls and pick up my cat and other belongings once I find a place to live. Im having a garage sale in 2 weeks and selling everything I wouldnt be able to get out there. Shit!!!! I must be serious. Any other info on living areas, potential rentals, or others who live out there, dont hesitate to share! Chau! -c

    BEND

Im seriously considering moving to Bend. It may (or may not) be very soon. I just sent out a resume to the park and rec dept for a job that is a perfect fit and Im highly qualified for. Though I feel like Im jumping the gun with the possibility, the position does start July 1st. This means I need to have an answer and plan ready right away IF I were hired. The pros of possibly doing this... -dry air, which will be better than the midwest sauna for my newly developed asthma. I really want to breath again. -SMITH! SMITH! SMITH! (I LOVE THAT PLACE!!!!! ) -smaller than the twin cities - less politics and bullshit -cheaper car insurance! -cheaper living expenses (or so it seems) -something new -its an almost ideal job Cons -moving so soon might cause a lot of complications -getting my cat out there. -Ice climbing is SOOOOOOOOOOO far away -cost might wipe out my savings for a while Can anyone tell me about the best areas in bend to rent - I prefer older over 'modern'. Are there better websites than the bend bulletin for resources? Whats the likelihood of staying in the grasslands for a month without getting harrassed and kicked out? Anything else I should know or be warned of about the area? Whatever happens is meant to be. I wont be terribly disappointed if I dont get the job. If thats the case, I think I will definately continue to search for jobs in the area. Thanks for any input! cheers!
