  1. Hmmm predatory forgeign policy? Ever heard of Pax Romana?
  2. J_B – Have you no shame! In 1991 the Iraq news agency claimed that 1.6 million Iraqis died because of the sanctions. That’s 160,000 per year. 41% of these were children. During the first year of the war you claim a bit over 10,000 casualties. By the way Kling is hardly a neocon. Whatever it is you are smoking, it must be good. PP
  3. John Kerry was too busy campaigning to cast the single additional vote necessary for the Senate to approve the extension of expiring unemployment benefits. Because Kerry didn't show up an vote "yes," the measure failed by one vote. Extension of unemployment benefits is seen by Democrats as a cornerstone of progressive federal government response to recession. In a New York Times column just two months ago, Paul Krugman blasted Bush for having "rejected" such a measure. In fact, Bush endorsed it. It's Krugman's boy Kerry who has "rejected" it Related link is here Kerry either knew and didn't care about the vote or his friend sin WA like him so much they left him out of the loop.

  5. Question: If releasing the pictures causes the prisoners humiliation and thus is contrary to the convention, is allowing the publication of these pictures by a US company tantamount to the same thing? For example, if the prisoners were being march from point a to pint b ( in the US) the US would have the obligation to prevent its citizens from attacking the prisoners as they marched. How is allowing the publication of the pictures any different? Chances are a young man entering the US prison system will be raped within 48 hrs. Crimes against criminals are still crimes. By the way how often have the prison pictures been on the front page? The tv networks stopped showing video of people jumping/falling from the WTC almost immediately.
  6. Wall Street Journal columnist Holman Jenkins : First impressions led to an outpouring of commentary suggesting a diabolical, Strangelovian plot to hit Arabs where they're most vulnerable, their sexual pride. In fact, what we've had thrown back in our faces appears partly to be the worst aspects of our own domestic prison culture, exported to Iraq, about which Americans cannot claim to have been ignorant...California's chief law enforcement officer, Bill Lockyer, treated as an open joke the prevalence of homosexual rape in his prison system. ...Mr. Lockyer famously told the Journal, "I would love to personally escort [Enron Chief Ken] Lay to an 8-by-10 cell that he could share with a tattooed dude who says, `Hi, my name is Spike, honey.'" Though some chuckled at his witless quip, a better response would have been to recognize the truth that underlay the weak humor and asked Mr. Lockyer why he allows extrajudicial punishments such as rape to be carried out on inmates putatively in the state's care.
  7. Question: How can the US release photos of the Iraqi prisoners? Wouldnt that lead to their humiliation and be gainst thwe convention? Question: Why do we have all those pictures of Iraqis in prison and no pictures of the young man being beheaded?
  8. Singled out? No way you continuously brought up the issue of "imminent danger" with regard to Bush's actions. I am interested in discussing the whoel issue of preemption. I fel that since you repeatedly brought the issue up you had an interest in the subject. Where have I flamed? What if Iran did have nuclear weapons and decided that a nuclear attack on Israel was indeed worth the damage it would sustain. At that point what recourse woudl Israel have? With this potential threat what would be the conditions in which you would agree that Israel would have the moral authority to preemtively strike? PP
  9. You and that word! Please clearly define what you mean by this.
  10. I think that if they believe that Iran is about to have nuclear capabiltity and they belive that a strike will be effective in preventing achieving that capability, they will strike regardless of what the US wishes. And they would be right too.
  11. link 1: Nuclear Weapons Can Solve the Israel Problem Rafsanjani said that Muslims must surround colonialism and force them [the colonialists] to see whether Israel is beneficial to them or not. If one day, he said, the world of Islam comes to possess the weapons currently in Israel's possession [meaning nuclear weapons] - on that day this method of global arrogance would come to a dead end. This, he said, is because the use of a nuclear bomb in Israel will leave nothing on the ground, whereas it will only damage the world of Islam. Link 2: Israel may be preparing to attack Iranian nuclear facilities within the year, according to US administration assessments reported on Army Radio Saturday morning. Chuck - The question is: Given the speech and the enviroment of the ME do you think that Israel already has the right to go bomb Iran. Stop that talking head equivocation.
  12. preemtive strike? Read this first. Then read this second. PP
  13. I think it is this guy!
  14. No I can't really at least not in a reliable way. I think the later editions of the Yos guide have more instructions than the copy we used. Try the Supertopo sight. IIRC you want to try the third(?) crack.
  15. I liked this route much more than Reg NW HD. I climbed it over 20 years ago but..... The first pitch is an easy 11a. You can yard up on a few bolts. The second pitch is much harder 11a with that would be harder to aid. I am sure this pitch has changed since we did it. It was definately the crux in terms of leading difficulty some scary moves of of bashies and old pins. We fixed these two pitches. The next few are very straight forward. The crux pitch can easily be aided with only a few points of aid. Two pitches higher is a great pitch 11b. I think it can easily be aided. From then on the climbing is easy for quite awhile as long as you don't screw up the pitch following the big traverse. We did and wasted time and got scared. Try to get good beta for this part. We started up too soon. The next pitches are easy and really fun and under 5.10. These end at a large ledge. One more .11a pitch with grainy rock is all there is of the hard stuff. Thanksgiving ledge soon follows. The pitches above here are straight forward and easy. Differences from NW HD: 1. Better climbing. 2. No real chimneys. 3. No bolt ladders. 4. Less people. 5. Big ledges near the top so if you dont't do it in a day you can have a nice sleep. 6. Top pitches are comparatively easy. 7. In shade most of the day. 8. Shorter approach. Great climb you'll have a blast.

  21. Damn uncooperative Americans Walk OUT! Link 1 The valiant nations in the UN carry on with their decision! ( Link 2) Why can't we just get along... (Link 3) PP
  22. You are correct in that I believe that cooperation in any meaningful sense doesn't require that any country sign any agrerement just because there are alot of other countries who are willing to sign it. I am not refusing to answer your question but I have asked for clarification. At least a sfar as Kyoto I have been very clear that I believe that the US cooperated. You appear to be saying that in order for the US to be cooperative it must agree with anthing the "majority of nations" agrees to. I consider this view to be silly. Should Trinidad have an voice equal India?
  23. Mattp – You are confusing my two posts. But to address the cooperative v uncooperative nature of the US government I say you should provide a better definition. Take the Kyoto accords - which I believe you are suggesting is an example of uncooperation – relative to the Kyoto accords the US was in fact cooperative. It participated in the process and when the final agreement was not acceptable the US refused to sign on. Something within the right of a sovereign state. I say in this case it cooperated with the international community. I am not being squirrelly at all unless by cooperation you mean acquiescence.
