mmcmurra Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 A few years ago I went on a Washington state climbing mini-road trip, and on the way between Mazama and Leavenworth noticed some nice-looking granite around a lake near Lake Chelan, off Alt. 97. I finally looked this up yesterday and realized it's Lake Pateros. Anyone know if any of the slabby crags rising out of the lake have been developed? I'm looking for a place to go with my Dad when he visits in March -- we typically try to combine outdoor activities, so I'm thinking of a canoe approach to some dry granite in March. (Any other ideas along these lines?) Thanks, Michael Quote
erik Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 banks lk has a some granite that is asseciable via canoe..though i think it is more then just slabby... do a google search for marty bland..he has a decent inland nw climbing website. beacon rock down in the colombia river gorge is good multisport spot. canoing, biking, hiking and some good climbing erik Quote
icegirl Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 yes, I believe there is a group of climbers that has been developing lots of neat climbs up and down the okanogan valley. Quote
Uncle_Tricky Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 I'm not sure precisely which rocks you are referring to. Most of the stuff along 97 between Wenatchee and Pateros is loose and junky. There is one nice looking outcrop just before Pateros at the confluence of the Methow and Columbia rivers. It's across the Columbia (on the East side) from where the two rivers meet, set up above some orchards. Looks like the glacier that once flowed out of the Methow scoured out the opposite valley wall, leaving some clean and solid looking rock. I've tried to get there--it's hard to do without crossing private orchard land. I turned around at the sign that says "No Trespassing: this property is patrolled three days a week by an angry vinegar pissing shotgun toting son of a bitch who believes in Western Justice. Is today your lucky day?" Quote
icegirl Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 looks like it's time to go make friends with some orchardists... Quote
j_b Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 Looks like the glacier that once flowed out of the Methow scoured out the opposite valley wall not very important but it's probably ice coming down the Okanogan and Columbia valleys. My guess is the Methow glacier probably never made it to Pateros. Quote
