peas Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I'm heading to Sky Pilot tomorrow morning with the plan of climbing everything that I can in a two days before returning to family life. I've never been to the area before so I'd like to know what the glacier is like. Crampons? Axe? Can you just skirt around it? Will other gullies in the area be snow/ice free by now? Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Quote
pazzo Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Below are a couple of pics of the Stadium Glaciar on Aug 6th. I brought Kahtoola Microspikes and an axe, but ascended the glacier fairly directly (further left and steeper) compared to other GPS tracks I’ve seen posted online. Without my axe I would have gone for a pretty long ride. I wish I had brought my aluminum Grivel crampons.. Here’s the line I took: And here is the glacier to the right of previous pic: I’m not sure if that helps at all.. good luck! Quote
peas Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 Thanks. That's exactly the sort of thing that I'm looking for. Quote
glassgowkiss Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 There is much less snow now, compared to the pic from Aug 6th. Quote
