denalijacob Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Hey there I'm relatively new to the cascade climbing scene (4 helens climbs and not even close to the top of hood and adams due to weather/unforeseen circumstances). I was wondering if Hood sounds like it would be doable for me (specifically the steepness around the pearly gates/old chute). I can't tell from the pictures and any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Quote
monkeyboy Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 It all depends on the conditions.Mt Hood can be a a nice easy stroll or considerably more difficult. Sounds like you would benefit from some instruction and mentoring from some experienced partners, climbing club, or guide service. Quote
JasonG Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 The top of Hood is a good deal steeper and icier than St. Helens typically is and the consequences of a fall are not trivial. That said, in good conditions it isn't extremely technical, but I am always surprised at how steep it is for a "beginner" climb (usually when I resort to turning around and facing in for part of the descent). There have been plenty of accidents over the years so be safe and practice your steep snow skills somewhere with a good runout before giving it a shot. You are correct that it is a good next step up from St. Helens.....Good luck! Quote
ivan Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 fukit! you walk up to the hogsback and, even if you chicken-out, you've had a great experience - top it out and it's all gravy - to put it all in perspective, i summited my first time only to be greeted by a 12 year old girl n'her dad Quote
denalijacob Posted October 28, 2012 Author Posted October 28, 2012 Thanks guys! It does look like it would depend on conditions... Hopefully my maybe partner will work out and I'll post a trip report in the spring. Quote
