Trip: Kalymnos, Greece -

Date: 4/5/2011

Trip Report:

For spring break this year I took a trip to Kalymnos with Misty along with some of her coleagues who besides ones guy, we pretty much non-climbers.

We met up in Turkey again and headed out from there. Unless you fly into Athens and then fly to Kalymnos it's a pretty long travel day. It goes something like bus, plane, bus, ferry, bus, ferry, bus.

Kalymnos is an amazing island. Easily among the coolest places I've ever been. The amount of rock there is staggering for such a small'ish island, and of spectacular quality. In the spring there is a ton of naturally growing herbs in the hills and mountains so the air smells great; it gives it a bit more of that island paradise vibe.

The Island is easy to travel around by moped, and they're fairly inexpensive to rent. Unfortunately, day three saw one of our troupe cruise into oncoming traffic and get his scooter run over by a huge truck. Luckily, he and the passenger came out pretty unscathed. I wish I'd taken a picture of the mangled bike, but it didn't seem proper at the time. He had to buy the scooter and got a ticket for running a stop sign.

The climbing we did was pretty mellow, but still really fun. About a month and a half before the trip I earned a severe pulley tear in my left ring, so pulling was pretty much out. That and we were taking some new climbers out. One of em was even leading by the second day. One of the guys, Rob, was an experienced climber and wanted to send some proper steep limestone so I belayed him for part of a day on some really nice looking routes.

There are a lot of hikes as well. We did one loop hike that gains one of the impressive mountainous ridges that bisect the island. It was a little longer and steeper than our non-hiker friends were led to believe.

Then of course there was secluded beach chillin time.

Kalymnos is a wonderful place. I highly recommend it. Check out Harry's on the far side of the island for nice accomodations and good people.

Gear Notes:

Kalymnos is amazing. Springtime was fantastic when I went. The food is fresh in a way I've never had in the States. Serious to die for Greek Salads and Lamb.

And the climbing is every bit as good as looks.
