I've seen many fences around central Oregon that have square piles of rocks at the corners, held in by wood sticks (there are some near Smith Rock). My question is: What are those rocks for?

Sorry if the answer is obvious, I'm no ranch hand. [laf]

I assume they're just to hold the fence in place? They seemed to be placed along the fences at random though. It really is a gripping question.

The rock piles, usually held together with chicken wire or some other wire fencing, is for those occasions when you go to dig a hole and hit rock. In some areas of Oregon you will even see road signs installed this way.

According to my local Central Oregon Hick friend. The piles of rock are to anchor the fence, while tightening the strands. The ground is to rocky to dig good holes for the posts without a good auger. I'm working on my hick knowlege.

I'm a hick, and I actually got to build a little bit of fence like that while worker for some ranchers during summerbreaks in high school. Yee haw, little doggies. [big Grin]
