iain Posted May 28, 2002 Posted May 28, 2002 I've seen many fences around central Oregon that have square piles of rocks at the corners, held in by wood sticks (there are some near Smith Rock). My question is: What are those rocks for? Sorry if the answer is obvious, I'm no ranch hand. Quote
iain Posted May 28, 2002 Author Posted May 28, 2002 I assume they're just to hold the fence in place? They seemed to be placed along the fences at random though. It really is a gripping question. Quote
sk Posted May 28, 2002 Posted May 28, 2002 I wish I could help you out. I just don't know. JK saw some and just assumed they were some form of red neck art Quote
Gimpy Posted May 28, 2002 Posted May 28, 2002 The rock piles, usually held together with chicken wire or some other wire fencing, is for those occasions when you go to dig a hole and hit rock. In some areas of Oregon you will even see road signs installed this way. Quote
iain Posted May 28, 2002 Author Posted May 28, 2002 Thanks a bunch. I feel like an ignorant city slicker now. Quote
mtnrgr Posted May 28, 2002 Posted May 28, 2002 According to my local Central Oregon Hick friend. The piles of rock are to anchor the fence, while tightening the strands. The ground is to rocky to dig good holes for the posts without a good auger. I'm working on my hick knowlege. Quote
nolanr Posted May 29, 2002 Posted May 29, 2002 I'm a hick, and I actually got to build a little bit of fence like that while worker for some ranchers during summerbreaks in high school. Yee haw, little doggies. Quote
