Mr._Blister
Just by way of an FYI, a partner and I were rapping Silent Running at Three O'clock Rock yesterday, and ran into a pair that were on the route that runs between Total Soul and Silent Running (Bushy Galore? I'm not sure). They had Smoot's new book, and from the topo, it appeared to them that they were on Silent Running, which is where they wanted to be. I gave them Matt Perkins' topo and pointed them in the right direction. They just needed to move about 75' to the right. Their confusion was quite understandable given Smoot's drawing. I recommend that anyone looking for Total Soul or Silent Running use Matt's website or the new Nelson/Potterfield book. Smoot does a good job with other climbing areas, but his info is somewhat out-of-date for Darrington. Also, don't skip the execellent new seventh pitch to Silent Running. It's different than the lower pitches, and takes gear and draws. Cheers, John Sharp [This message has been edited by Mr. Blister (edited 08-13-2001).]
crazyjizzy
I don't think Schmuck Fuck has ever even been to Darrington.
Smoker
Yup! got to agree with ya Blister. I did Silent Running yesterday. The 7th pitch is excelent Great pitches with nice new retro bolts and hangers. Thanks MattP. I thought the 6th pitch was kinda sporty with old bolts. Love those Fix chain anchors! Steve_A
Hey John, We were the party next to you on Total Soul yesterday. Sounds like Silent Running is well worth doing. Total Soul was excellent. Highly recommended. Steve
Smoker
We were the party next to you on Total Soul yesterday. You guys had it on cruise! You made the line look so easy that I'll be on it the next time I'm up that way. Has Total Soul been retro bolted as well? Does anyone know if the superfly protects well? Steve_A
Oops. I didn't pick up on the fact that the original post for this thread was in August. Yes, Smoker, Total Soul has been retrobolted. Bring a standard rack as well. Steve
Steve_A
I stand corrected. I didn't mean to imply that new bolts had been added to an existing climb. I just assumed those shiny 3/8" bolts had replaced old originals. Thanks for the update Mattp. Steve
mattp
Actually, Total Soul has not been retrobolted. The route was only put up in 1999, and it was done in a modern style with all bolts being 3/8" and chains at all belay stations except the last. Although there are some runouts here and there (it is not completely sportified), I would be surprised if anybody felt the need to retrobolt it. There is one pitch, and parts of two others, that follow the old Rubber Soul line. And on these, there are some bolts where formerly there were none.
