Soil compaction restricts water and oxygen uptake by roots, and is associated with roads, parking lots, foot traffic, construction machinery, livestock, poor soil preparation, and a host of other factors. The advantage to self incrimination (admitting errors) is that you get more scope on your errors from others. Really I usually treat the alpine environment with decency. If I had wanted to keep what I did a secret, it would have been easy. I hope I don't encourage this behavior but I was a bit ignorant of the impact of my camping.
