nlunstrum Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Hello. Hoping someone can answer a Ptarmigan traverse question. Has anyone bivied on the flattish knoll west (and slightly below) the exit to the red ledges? And if so, were there any water sources (mid summer) within a reasonable distance? Thanks so much. Le Piston Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 I haven't bivied on that knoll, but Kool Aid Lake is not far from the Red Ledges and had running water (see picture). I remember seeing a couple spots past the Red Ledges with running water. Hope that helps Quote
Jim Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 One of the three times I was on the traverse we got across Red Ledge and then got a major dose of fog and drizzle and we wandered back to Kool-Aid lake because we couldn't find a water source on the knoll - least not anywhere we wanted to walk to - it was the thrid week of August, however. Got up the next morning to blue skies and carried on. Quote
goatboy Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 With the low snowpack this year, count on water sources to be a little thinner by mid-summer I expect... Quote
morrison_ryan Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 I camped on the knoll last year and found a small spring that I could use to filter water. One option is to fill up with water at Kool-Aide Lake before heading across Red Ledge. Quote
nlunstrum Posted March 4, 2010 Author Posted March 4, 2010 Thank you all for the responses and suggestions. The knoll looks like a good, scenic option to the camp at koolaid. Quote
