coach Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Hi everyone, I am new to this site! I just moved to the Vancouver, WA area and I have been eying Mt. Hood for the past couple months. I have been reading up on the South Slope/Hogsback approach. I was wondering if anyone has been up there this winter and if you have input on what the Old Crater Variation is like? Besides bringing the normal helmet, ice axe, crampons, and other avy gear would you recommend any other equipment? Would you advise roping up while climbing the Old Crater Variation? Thanks for the beta! Quote
letsroll Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 has got to be and/or not very smart to actually look at this web site. I say give not info as this person clearly is not putting forth any effort. Quote
ivan Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 i'll bite - old crater is easy and should be done w/o a rope - bring a second tool - look out for ice chunks bouncing down the slope from the upper rim - aim to be hitting the hogsback shortly after sunup enjoy Quote
coach Posted March 1, 2010 Author Posted March 1, 2010 Thanks for the information, I realized after this post that I should have searched the site a little more. Some of the most recent trip reports were very helpful. Thank you. Quote
