Corduroy Man Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Hi all, I've got next week free. I would love to get in another rad aid session out at the Rat Cave. I would like to practice setting up my new portaledge and haul bag. Does anyone want to join? I have a car and can pick you up anywhere in PDX if need be. I've climbed mostly just C1 but I'm eager to learn for my climb of Mescalito this May. Rock on! Quote
ivan Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 dude, don't do hauling and 'ledging at the rat cave - the bolts suck and it's primarily a sporto place and i'd like to keep it friendly w/ them - if you want to haul and ledge it, go to b-tons and spend a night on gandalfs or something, just don't park in the day lot Quote
JosephH Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Definitely don't make a visual spectacle of any kind out at the Rat Cave - you for sure don't want to be responsible for the Friends of the Gorge or any other kind of officialdom walking up and surveying an already [legally] sketch scene. Corduroy Man Posted February 25, 2010 Author Posted February 25, 2010 Well what gave me the idea was the videos I found online of guys hauling and setting up portaledges there. My partner went by there a couple weeks ago and saw Scott (Plaidman) setting up his portaledge with Big Wall Rick. Maybe you should post signs at the base telling everyone not too. Sorry for pissing eveyone off. Rock on! Quote
ivan Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 don't think anyone's pissed here, cm, just passing along some friendly advice (i for one, a rather large mammal, managed to rip a bolt out of that horseshit rock w/ just my body-weight last spring, so would be damned leery of putting a ledge and a bunch of crap onto anything out there ) Â hauling practice can be had on gandalf's as i said (a nice long one 2, a 70 m rope would reach from base to top - you can set up a similiar deal on the far right side of ozone when it's empty) Quote

I understand that, and like Scott and Rick, but it wasn't a good idea for them to be doing it either and especially not posting videos on the Oregonian blog about it. The reality is that climbing at the Rat Cave is on more than dubious legal ground and if folks keep drawing attention to it the result is very likely to be unpleasant. The Friends of the Gorge and Gorge Commission aren't any fun at all to deal with on this sort of issue. Quote
