WadeTheBuilder Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 We are climbing Rainier in August Via Muir and I am wondering if my 3 season tent is going to be good enough for the climb. I want to be prepared but don't want to buy more gear if it is not necessary. I have a Big Agnes Emerald Mountain SL3. Thanks for the advice. Quote
Vickster Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 If you get unlucky with the wind like I did last May, it will probably get ripped to shreds Quote
Le Piston Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 You can be treated to bad conditions any month on Rainier. It can be sunny on the approach and by night have high winds, snow, or whatever crap she decides to throw your way. A bomber mountaineering tent is nice, but not a sure thing. I've seen a poorly secured North Face Mountain 25 with a kid in it become a kite at Muir and almost wind up in a crevasse (saved by a quick ranger) I usually use my BD Firstlight for most of my trips, which most people consider a 3 season tent. If you secure your tent well and build a wind block you should be fine. I wish you fair weather and a great trip! Quote
WadeTheBuilder Posted July 7, 2009 Author Posted July 7, 2009 so do you guys think I should purchase a true "mountaineering tent"? to be safe? Quote
ScaredSilly Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 I would not worry about it - if the winds pick up and trash your tent you can utilize the public shelter. Might not get any sleep but at least you will have shelter from the storm. Quote
t_rutl Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 like most said you should be just fine...if you feel the need to upgrade but trips will be few and far inbetween just rent a 4 season Quote
WadeTheBuilder Posted July 8, 2009 Author Posted July 8, 2009 After reading a bunch of reviews, went with the Sierra Designs Convert 2. Looking forward to it! Quote
