WageSlave Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Trip: Mt. Hood - Leuthold's Couloir Date: 4/18/2009 Trip Report: I wanted to get up in the mountains alone, so up Leuthold's I went this morning. There's a fair bit of wallowing to get to Illumination Saddle and to get across the Reid. I recommend my strategy of less-than-glorious sideways crawling. It seemed like a good plan at the time. Crossed the 'schrund at 5:20 (it's hard to find, but there) and the snow decided to play nice with me. Recent avy debris made for faster cruising. Not much shit was being funneled down toward me. I guess climbing when it's still freezing is a prudent plan. Cruised up to the top of Queen's Chair and got there at 7:10. The ramp up to the summit ridge is covered in rime feathers that like to collapse when you try to step up on them. Crossing over to the summit is pretty mellow, only 100 ft or so of exposed traversing. Sat my ass down in the wind at 8:00 and watched the barbarian hordes come up the south side. I'd feed y'all photos but none of them turned out. Gear Notes: 2 tools (kinda overkill) 'pons Cypress Hill on the headphones Approach Notes: Follow the pack and then confuse them by not going the right way. Quote
EastKing Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 (edited) Great TR! I am going there tomorrow at 10pm and hoping to line up my climb to reach the summit by 5:30 am Monday in time to see the sunrise and head back down. Your info on the 'shrund helped me out. Frikadeller Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 That must have been your tracks I saw heading over the saddle yesterday. I stopped off there on my decent from the hot rocks area, and the snow and ride was sweet, and missed the hordes skinning up the hill... Quote
WageSlave Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 Yup, those were mine. I didn't see anyone else come my way in the early hours. Ivan, it was way more rewarding and mellow than having anyone else around. Quote
rocky_joe Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 thanks for the boot pack, it's much appreciated. Thomas (maineiac) and I climbed leuthold this morning. I was astounded that no one else was on the route today, it was in fantastic shape. Quote
