John Frieh Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Looking for something to put the skis in for airline travel. Given current baggage rules ($$$) would perfer something on the lighter side so with skis and poles I am still well under 50 pounds (so I can put other shit in there). Wheel are optional IMO unless you think I really want them. My hope is a bag that will hold/protect: 1-2 pair of skis 1-2 pair of poles tent poles ice tools etc etc Carl? TIA Quote
EastCoastBastard Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Hey I've got an MEC ski bag, the Deluxe Ski bag and I really like it. I can fit 2 pairs of skis, all my ice gear, ski and climbing helmets, plus clothing. It's great. and at $37 CDN, it's stupid cheap. Very light, but well built and burly. Quote
Hugh Conway Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I have an ancient Patagonia ski bag that's no longer made two zippered ski compartments that'll handle 3 pairs of ski, iceaxe, camping shit, ski boots... lots of stuff. Dynastar and Atomic made ones similarly recently, otherwise Dakine makes a decent travel bag, checkout MEC. Ice climbing and skiing? Checkout this little place sometime http://www.lagrave-lameije.com/ Quote
rbw1966 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I have a dakine ski bag I bought on STP for something like $20. Nicely padded, it fits two pairs of skis, two sets of poles, skins and other odds and ends--could easily fit crampons and ice tools if you remove the pics. Rang in just below 50 lbs when I went to Austria over xmas. Weight of skis should be a bigger consideration than weight of bag. Quote
stinkyclimber Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Don't know about US carriers, but last year or the year before, the a-holes at Air Canada started enforcing a rule that prohibits anything but skis and poles in ski bags. They did this because, of course, most of us filled up our ski bags with everything else under the sun to get around weight limits on other check-in articles. I have had my ski bags checked at times, and they made a fuss about the clothing I had shoved in there. I claimed it was for "padding and protection" and blamed it on shitty baggage handlers. That held them, but they weren't happy. My advice - stick tools and tent poles at the bottom of the bag, where it is tough to see without pulling everything else (which they probably won't do). Quote
