jared_j Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 So that you don't have to carry a shovel handle / shaft? Has anyone had luck jerry-rigging one? Quote
rbw1966 Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 black diamond used to make one that I still have. The handle and blade are both metal so by eliminating the handle you are still probably close to the same weight as the new-school lexans out there. Quote
ivan Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 the one's i've had/used didn't hold up well in challenging snow conditions and really tended to bust when trying to pry out frozen blocks - it is damned awkward tryign to fit an entire snow-shovel into an alpine pack though... Quote
mccallboater Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I also have the old Chonaird (spelling?) metal one that works pretty well with my 70cm ice ax. It's practically indestructible and has a nice curve for finishing the insides of ice caves. It's also done double duty as a snow melting platform, producing about a pint of water per scoop over the stove. Quote
