crmlla2007 Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I will be going to Seattle to visit family in mid-October and wondered about the possibility of hiking up to Muir and spending the night for a workout and shakedown for future trips. Since I'll be alone I don't really care about a summit, just camping at Muir (and even at that, if the weather, etc won't allow for an overnight, a day-hike is cool as well). Previous experience on Rainier(I'm sure someone will ask): Winter expedition seminar at Muir in April 2007 Summit via Kautz July 2007 Is this feasible or should I do something different? Any advice/suggestions appreciated. Thanks Quote
genepires Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 sounds good. weather permitting, it should be a great time with no crowds. You may have some new snow but shouldn't be enough for snowshoes. (might be a good idea to either bring them or be ready to rent them if you find they are needed) Fall seems to have come a little early this year so it "may" be a bit cold in mid october. Enjoy! crmlla2007 Posted September 30, 2008 Author Posted September 30, 2008 Thanks, snowshoes wasn't on my list. Anyone have beta on the crevasses in the Muir Snowfield? Quote
lazyalpinist Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Beta here: http://mountrainierconditions.blogspot.com/ (Although I couldn't find Muir specific.) Possible better beta here: http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=10896.0 Quote
Pandora Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Was there yesterday (Friday, 10/10) to shred the freshies on the snowfield. It's looking much better with a new coat of snow: the crevasses were filled in (or at least covered over), and we never saw evidence of them or punched through. The snow was quite deep in spots; I would definitely recommend bringing flotation. I've experienced t-shirt weather up there in October, but it was FRIGID this time around. Quote
crmlla2007 Posted October 12, 2008 Author Posted October 12, 2008 thanks - that sounds a lot better than dirty steel wool ice. Quote
