So I just called a reputable mechanic in Seattle who deals with only Subaru, and they told me that they will not do just a brake pad replacement on new models, but require to do the rotors as well. They say that the Subaru rotors are so thin that they will warp easier after they machine them, and in their opinion they are ripping the customer off by just doing the pads. Are they blowing sunshine up my ass or is this a legitimate concern?

I know that my buddy got his WRX turned and they were fine and he drives like an asshole. I would first makes shure they even need to be turned. Any vibration on braking? Are the rotors deformed? Pitted? Grooved?

I haven't looked at the rotors closely, but I've got ~67k on them. No vibration or anything, but it sounds like the pads are on their last legs.

Front: cannot exceed 0.0030 inches (0.075 mm)

Rear: " " 0.0028 inches (0.070 mm)

 

Also the minimum rotor thickness are

 

Front: 22 mm (fresh rotors are 24 mm thick)

Rear: 8.5 mm (fresh rotors are 10 mm thick)

I smell sunshine in your ass....No manufacturer would make their rotors as a disposable item...it generally takes very harsh abuse or a hundred thousand miles, to bring a rotor to the end of it's effective life..

 

Go to a different mechanic...lol...and you should be asking a WRX forum...not a climbing forum...they will tell you what to do..

I call BS.

I had a 2003 WRX and I had to machine the stock rotors around 25K miles (pads were fine) - I too was driving like an Arsshole.

 

The brakes were perfect after that. Warped rotors will cause noticeable vibration when braking.
